no backbox means an MOT failure

How so, I had a rover P6 V8 3.5 litre. I custom built the exhaust system (using peco parts), and didn't bother with a backbox, all the MOT station are looking for is a secure exhaust with no leaks, noise is to their discretion. Not having a backbox is not an MOT failure.
