gti splitters are fairly easy to fit, definately a DIY job, if i remember correctly!! was nearly 4 years since i bought and fitted mine!!
if i remember, there are 2 star top screws on the inside of the front arches. when u've undone these then i do believe its a case of clipping the old one out then clipping the new one in!! then putting the star screws back in!!
may take a bit of elbow grease (or 2 people to make sure its lined up neatly) but its definately a DIY job!
i like it unpainted (like it was on my old silver polo, i had black side bumps etc) but i must admit, it looks fantastic sprayed like on mr. madness' car and a few of the other members cars!!!
at the end of the day, its personal preference and whether u have the funds available!

are the rear brakelight covers good quality? they look wicked but... is it just me or are the films around the edges (near your fingers) peeling off? sorry to be antagonistic...

Another way of doing it would be to get a POLO decal, stick it on the light then spray the light, peel off the decal when you've finished and voila
