Sorry to hear that Alun :( .

Have a look in your area's yellow pages (or www.yell.com) for gearbox specialists in your area and get a quote for the work (to replace all the bearings).

Not 100% sure if this would be relevant as I know in the grand scheme of things 27,000 miles is not a lot but in the eyes of the law you have legally accepted the goods. Also Im not sure if this would only apply if you had the car from new, I think as alot of the cars have previous owners this may not be the case. But the Sale of goods act says that you dont have to accept goods if they are
- unfit for purpose ( which technically they are because they keep breaking)
- of statisfactory quality ( which they obviously are not since loads keep breaking)

But again not sure how relevant this is to your problem unless you have had the car from new.

I just sent an e-mail to my local trading standards office stating this problem. My letter to VW made no difference what so ever, they just blatantly didn't give a toss. Hopefully with watchdog getting involved it may be possible to get something done. It's too late for me and a few others, I’ve already paid for the luxury of a new gearbox but hopefully we can stop it happening for a few others

i look forward to hearing how you go on - my gearbox needs replacing...just waiting for it to go fully before getting it changed. It'll feel like a new car once its been done though i'm sure.

Ill join in on this if it goes through, my gearbox has never been a joy to change gear since i've had it re-conditioned....and im not paying anymore labour costs to get it out and checked again, it will have to do but it hardly goes into reverse first time, and sometimes and hardly ever goes into 1st gear smooth......

sorry mate, but thats the way mk5 boxes are, GHAY lol, just have to face it, if you dont want the problem again, you will just have to get a bigger engine hence getting a better gearbox for that engine ;) :P

Tell me about it. I just hope that spending over £500 getting it fixed that it doesn't end up being as sluggish as you've said yours has been.

After not having the car on the road it's like having two Christmas's coming up waiting to get it back next week. :D :D

As for the Watchdog thing, predictably I've not had a reply. Will everyone else who's had their gearbox go send them an email also please :) . We'll hassle them to see what happens
I wrote to them straight after you wrote to them
