You think yours are bad when idling, at least you diesels have got a couple of years worth of refinements on them. My MK4 honest to god sounds like a tank!!

just completed a trip of 500 miles to the isle of skye and loch ness on the return
50 mpg from a 12valve 1.2 petrol

pahhhh tdi's aint all that. i had my mams golf tdi down to low 20mpg on the motorway and averaged around 38 on a 150mile trip to manchester

Best bit is when you put your foot down and leave a smelly cloud of soot for the car you just dusted.
Im shocked by the mpg's you guys get... I get around 40-43mpg for about 50 miles if im being fairly behaved.... 36-40mpg if im ripping it.
Love it though, great little car.
Can be sitting on the 'private' motorway at 100 then boot it all the way to 120-125 by either A) dropping it down to fourth or B) just putting your toe down and plant it in fifth watching all the little torquies do there magic.
I did once hit 131 ish (126-7 on sat nav) behind a new slk on that 'private' motorway. I do admit though that slipstream and a slight hill did help
