I had the same thing years ago...
I'm pretty sure it's dust that's stuck on the grease on your stalks. The electrical arking when you use the stalks sets it alight.
Mine smoked a bit and I sh1t bricks and jumped out the car... It stopped really quickly, so I drove it to the dealers and that's what they said it was.

hi all, had the same problem as spoke about today, but only started to smoke when I started the car and lasted for about 15secs. any ideas? just driven the car 30miles and didn’t notice any more smoking.

Definately one of the stalks. I got my replacement stalk fitted a few weeks back - washers work fine now and no more smoke!

thanks for the reply, is it alright to keep driving the car till i can get it replaced?

Mine used to do it too. Only right after starting the car, there was a tiny trace of smoke coming from behind the steering wheel. Soon after, I had to replace the wiper lever as the contacts inside melted and I couldn't turn the wipers off...

The mechanic said it's a common issue with polos(vag's). No smoke since then...

Should be fine, just avoid using the stalk if at all possible (obviously not possible if an indicator)
