Cars registered
on or after 1 March 2001 based on CO2 emissions and fuel type.
Please note: These rates apply only to cars that have been type approved within category M1 of Annex II to Council Directive 70/156/EEC and which have been registered on the basis of a type approval certificate that shows its carbon dioxide emissions level in terms of grams per kilometre driven.
Band / CO2 emission figures (g/km)* / Diesel car 12 months rate £
A / up to 100 / £0.00
B / 101-120 / £35.00
C / 121-150 / £115.00
D / 151-165 / £140.00
E / 166-185 / £165.00
F / Over 185 / £205.00

The car tax regime changed from March 1st 2001.
For cars registered before that it works on engine size. For ones registered after that date it goes on (everybodys favourite) C02 emissions and the fuel used.

There isn't but the road tax rules applied are from the registration date so you pay £115 (Budget changes)
Not over 1549cc £115.00
Over 1549cc £180.00

does this apply for petrol engines aswell?
if the engine in the 2000 TDI polo is the same as the TDI engine in the 2001 polo then this cant be fair?

Applies the same for petrol too.
And fairness doesn't come into tax policy! Believe me I found that out studying it for a year.
The idea was to encourage people into newer, less CO2 emitting cars for the good of the environment, save the whale stuff.

so technically my 1.4 01/02 (not to sure which year its X reg but some websites tell me its 01) petrol emitts the same amount of C02 as a 1.4 petrol 2001 registered after the 1st of march 2001 but will get cheaper car tax.
This sucks. Why should i pay more??

Just the way it goes sadly. It isn't fair, and you can see how people ending up driving without tax.
On the GTi for example it went down from £180 to £165.

Cos the rules changed - tax changed on RFL are not introduced retrospectively so changes downwards only apply after a given date.....
So when you buy a car investigate the tax implications and it can save you a lot of money
Also a very good reason whilst despite being able to afford a much newer one of these (ignore the plate it's a 1999 - I wanted to avoid post 2001 cars) Thats why I bought
4.4 V8 and if you go on emisions it means it's in the highest possible group but £180 per year cos its pre 2001 and over 1549cc
That'll do me

if you dont mind me jumping onto this topic as well. i too am looking to sell my tdi. i have a color concept 2001 with black leather interior instead of the yellow/black. standard bbs wheels etc full service at a main dealer and have owned it from new. as far as i know there isnt anything wrong with the car and it has recently had its first exhaust and a new set of front discs and pads. 54k miles. the price guide gives £4.5k but as it is yellow do you think i will realistically get that. i think the colour looks spot on with the wheels....maybe i shouldnt be worried. if someone likes it then they will buy it.
