the impact driver doesnt need compressed air to work just a big old hammer

http://www.frost.co.uk/item_Detail.asp? ... t%20Driver

and when you chage the pads you will need to wind the pistons all the way back into the caliper with either a rewind tool a G clamp or a crowbar( a tad pikey but it works on the front pads)

the crowbar method you leve the old pads in and stick a crowbar in the gap and push back the pistons that way) dont forget to remove the cap on the fulid resovoir

when you put the new pads in you will have a gap initially then you bolt everything on and stand on the brakes a few times (engine on )

then take her for a slow drive check that the brakes actually work.,

then the fun part bedding them in.

some say to do it slowley some like to do it in one sitting. and EBC say to do it the fast way on the leflet that comes with the greenstuff pads.

the quick way is take her upto about 30mph and brake down to about 10 mph repeat about 3 times dont stop.
then take it upto 60mph and brake to a near stop repeat a few times.

now drive for a mile or 2 easy on the brakes to let them cool.

but i prefer to drive carfully for abotu 100 miles then there properly beded in altho it took my rear disks about 400 miles to bed in right. but i didnt use new pads n disks they were the old pads and recon disks.

Pedro_Hilario wrote:Just one question, when i saw my pads they were tight against the disk, no space between the disc and the pad, like it was almost glued. When i get the new ones in should they be as tight as that? Or do i need to leave some clearance of some type in order for the brakes to squeeze the disk?
It does need some space, so when you get the brakingcaliper off and take the old pads out, make sure to "push" the brakingpiston back into the caliper using again a pliers (big on this time which you can adjust, like the plumbers use, Mario&Luigi-style  ) then put in the new pads (use some coppergrease like I mentioned earlier) and mount the caliper back in position.

ready to roll then 8)

My small odissey continues.

So today I got some free time and the garage and I thought, let's get the brake sorted out.

Got the screw out with the drill, got the new discs on, got the piston all the way back to make room for the new pads when i realise one small detail:

The pads are way to thick for this setup!!! I ordered the discs and pads from a known shop here in Portugal and i thought they wouldn't get it wrong, but they did!

Then I thought, maybe these are the pads for a non ventilated disc (because the ventilated disc is 239x18mm thick and the OEM is 10 or 12mm). Got the old disc, the pads are still huge! See the pics below

On the box of the pads it reads :

VW Polo 1.0 1.3 1.6 1.9D / 10/94-

On the marking it says 21 866 17,30

I went to a shop open on saturdays to check the pads list they have there and i found out another pad that i think is the right one:

It's for polos from 10/94 to 07/95 and it reads 17,00 (is this the thickness?) My polo is 11/94 ADX code engine. 1.3

On monday i'm calling the shop where i bought this to swap for the right pads, but if anyone has a notion about the right pads, codes, sizes, or anything for the Ferodo Premier, i would be thankfull.

P.S. - On the last pic it looks mounted, but that's only one pad, the other wouldn't fit with it. So you can see the thickness.

So you bought vented discs + to pads that go along with the vented discs?

But originally your car has un-vented (solid) discs?

Yes,

But the pads were suppost to work with the ventilated discs. I have a friend that also swapped from solid to ventilated brembo max with no problems. But he's got a 1.4

But even on the older discs these pads are way to thick for it

But now i'm lost. The pads thickness is 12mm, which Haynes Manual states is the correct thickness for ALL models!! And these Ferodo Premier do have 12mm (just measured them). What the hell?!?!

you muppet

I myself swapped from solid to vented discs, but this DOES require to swap brake calipers too, since the discs are thicker, you need wider calipers to fit the pads + disc. The new pads + vented discs won't fit your unvented calipers (this is the VW I system, which is engraved somewhere in your calipers).

to make it all fit you will need different calipers, the ones from a vented system, which Volkswagen calls the VW II system

(the mathematics is simple, pads in both systems are ezual thickness, but the vented discs are 18mm thick, the unvented 10mm, so you will be short of 8mm, which VW sorted out by mounting thicker calipers)

Sorry m8, but I'm afraid you'll have to score oyu some vented VW II calipers (you could have my spare set of VW II calipers lying around in my garage, but I don't think it will be worth the drive from Portugal :( )

Just a tip when you go to a junkyard to score you some calipers, they have VW II engraved in them, just make sure they're from a Polo mk4, 1.4, or 1.6 or even some diesels doesn't matter, as long as they're from a VW II brake-system

Hey,

Just a small update. I got the brakes on the car working perfectly

What started as a simple pad replacement ended out as a DIY with upgraded discs & pads with refurbed calipers!

Image

Now i'm just waiting on the Goodridge braided hoses i got from ebay and change the brake fluid to Dot 5.1 in the next few weeks. Then it will brake like mad!

Just to thank everybody who helped out, especially Jarno.

Oh ,and since the wheel was out i tried out my brothers 17", just for fun.

Way to big! I rather get the 15 "BBS RX II i got planned!

Now i just need to get the car winter ready!
