My worry is that although the aperture that allows the air in is larger, the point at which it connects to the airbox looks to be a very similar size.
My argument - how can anymore air get in?
Dave
Good point, even tho the results prove it does make it quicker?

I find 8bhp at the wheels VERY hard to believe.
in fact, I'd probably chuck the evidence away because it's such a big hike, and therefore it's got to be something else (temperature, rolling road settings, and so on) affecting it - even if it's two runs one after the other. you need at least 5 or 10 runs to prove anything that small.
I didn't notice any real increase fitting one on the TDI. if it is a difference it'll be a little better revving. but not even 5bhp that's for sure.

So the mod isnt really for more air flow, its for quicker air flow??? But whats the benfit of that???

Whatever you reckon mate. I cant believe someone goes to all the trouble of proving the worth of a mod and gets bagged out like this.

You can think all you want. Read the post read the gains in air through the whole intake and yet you still doubt. The increase of airflow would give a noticeable increase of HP.
The extra airflow you can multiply by 0.8 to give you a close guess at the extra horsepower
Dink the flap is mentioned in here

I haven't done the pipe mod yet, but I did remove the air deflector with a pencil grinder. Previously my GTI would only go to about 5500 revs in top gear, but after the mod it went to 6200 revs/226kph as indicated on the LCD display of the trip computer. So there is definately more air being forced in.

So is there anypoint in the PD160 intake mod? or are u just aswell cutting the deflector? my mate is wanting the intake but no point in gettin it if ur just aswell removing the deflector?

It is definately worth doing
They didnt re-design the part for no reason, it is considerably bigger than the stock part, and as such does flow better.

i think i'm going to do this mod once i get the car lol
it's not that much money. so if it does work then great but if it don't then hey -ho thats life

With the pd160 pipe + Green cotten + Little deflector cut out.
My "standard" vrs raced another standard vrs at santa pod on sunday, and i won the 5 races we had against eachother. i could see him in my rear view mirror.
Now obviously driver skill/reaction times etc are important, But i felt i had that extra give at the higher end of the rev range.
So, yes do the mod if you like!

it was an interesting read, but as I said it's only 2 dyno runs. it's hardly proof from a statistical point of view.
I've fitted the mod, so of course I still doubt - there was hardly any difference whatsoever on a tdi, as many people have already said. I think most of it is psychological to be honest.
I'm not "bagging" you out, I speak from first hand experience of the mod, and also 2 runs just doesn't cut it with me. the air readings are impressive, but it's hard to quantify that in terms of bhp.
maybe my tdi already has enough air, but the whole bigger pipe thing just smacks of the ebay cone filters claiming crazy 10bhp gains. I would think even an open unfiltered air box on the outside of the car wouldn't give 10bhp extra.

4. Now you will see the part that the trumpet came out of. It is attached to the front of the car with 2 torx bits. (below pic) Undo the screws and take induction funnel out.
5. Look down the induction funnel and you will see a flap that is blocking the flow of air. (Pic below) Cut it out with a Stanley knife or something similar.
And it will look like this.
David i didnt post the Dyno chart for proof, IMO dyno's should only be used as a tunng tool and not a definitive output reading. And for your info he did 3 before runs and 3 after runs and took the middle one from each for the chart to show everyone. The intake figures are what you should be looking at not the dyno chart. And comparing a TDI with a Turbo petrol is like comparing apples with oranges. So while you may not have felt an increase i sure as hell did. Like polo226 says itll easily run to redline now where without it it used to choke at 5500rpm.

Ok with my mates intake we took it out yesterday and cut away deflector. Also taped up where the deflector deflected any stones so no air escaped thro the bottom!

Kenny my thoughts about where that little slit at the bottom of the deflector is, would be to unblock it as itll also let water out if it gets in when driving in the rain. Just my thoughts. Cant see it letting to much air out either.

so how much would these parts be from seat?
or is the best place to get them from the person in the first post.
