Manage to get the wheel off in the end! Turned out to be two metal rods that you had to 'squeeze' or pull down on on end to take out the airbag.

However, once I put the new wheel on, it didnt fit...! The wheel goes on fine, but the airbag wont fit into it, even though they are both the new shape 3-spoke wheel!

I was thinking about getting the gti wheel now (without red stitching) but how do i know that will fit too..?

Can I ask for a pic of your gti wheel before it went on (also your old wheel if you have it..?) I think I can tell from the inside of the wheel (where the airbag would go).

edit:

The leather steering wheel I used is for sale!

will do later on when i get back.

Its baffling me: I think because its not a leather trimmed steering wheel its an ever so slightly different shape, so the airbag is different.

Damn VW and their nit-picking.

Bargain, snap one up quick!

Having said that I can't see why the other steering wheel didn't fit. I have swapped steering wheels about on a mk5 Golf and my Polo GTI and both airbags seemed exactly the same to me. Puzzled.
