I'm paying £699 for my gearbox reconditioned.
And bought a new cutch kit and cable cable for £121.
Just over £800 all together.
No point in doing the clutch yourself if someones going to take the box out after. They may aswell do it all at the same time, it won't cost any extra.

Has anyone ever written to Volkswagen about this in the past? it's a very common problem and it should have been modded a long time ago it seems. Maybe someone representing a forum such as this explaining the reliability problems, reading on the web seems quite a few models are affected.

Na il get it done all at the same time, but my mechanics at work are gona do it for me on the cheap, so im gona drop the box and find out wots broke and then order the broken parts! So not paying 699 thats exspensive, ebay ones are 425quid, and they give you 12month warrenty and fit it for u if u want, and if u give them ur box like old gearbox they'l payt u 75quid for it! and yeah a clutch kit is like 160ish, sachs i believe!

SACHS kit should not cost £160, I got mine for £86 with no sort of discount.
Yeh you cna get them off eBay, but they are previously naffed and reconditioned boxes, you don't know who had it before or what condition it used to be in. Wouldn't touch a third party recondition with a barge pole!
It's not a repair to be cutting cornerrs on really.

BUMP.
got a similar problem with my car, and tim_gti mentioned a few possible things it could be.
basically i recently had my clutch changed as it was knackered and i wasnt able to get into reverse without it crunching,..... the crunching issue is now solved and gears are perfect.
although the probem i now have is a slight whirring noise when the clutch is not pressed in. example, when i start the car up (whilst parked stationary) the car SOMETIMES makes a whirring noise, the second i put my foot down on the clutch the noise is gone. again if i lift my foot of the clutch noise comes back.
the car runs smoothly and i know the gearbox is fine, ive taken it back to the garage who did the clutch and they CLAIM that the noise is normal. but im not convinced and this only happened after the clutch was changed. any ideas what it could be? help much appreciated.

That my freind is the clutch release bearing, exact issue i had and same noise and everything, DONT DRIVE IT! book it in asap cos ur gearbox will go as does the drive shaft, flywheel and gears! Like mine did! Get it booked in and dont drive it dude!

If the release bearing is knackered or noisey it'll make a noise when the clutched down, not up?

Went through the insurance and claimed on my gearbox as i had damaged the drive shaft and flywheel and many uva parts,
550 quid excess got me a new gearbox and my front end painted and a new spliiter, new wheel at front and tyre, new clutch and cable and a service new everything basically its mint now! Lost my no claims but oh well, my bill at the end was
£2200 For everything to be done, so all in all a result!
On the road again!
