Hello again.
Just about feeling well enough to tackle this. The biggest bugbear of this process for me is that I don't have access to a laptop with XP so I have to take my pc out to the car
I hope someone can help (and I hope you are reading Alex

) I now have an OBD II cable, have the Ross-Tech download and connected to the car. Using the instructions from Ross-Tech, I have established a connection between the port and my PC.
Using their instructions as per their Wiki page for Throttle Body Alignment, I keep getting an error message. It states -
"No Response from Controller"
This message appears a minute or so after I have selected 01 - Engine.
The instructions say that "There are certain test conditions that must be met before doing a TBA -
No DTC's in the Engine Controller (Cant get into it to find out)
Throttle at idle position, foot off pedal. Yes, I was sure not to do that.
Throttle body must not be carbonised (

Thats why I am having to do this-because I cleaned it!)
Coolant Temp between 5 and 95 degrees. Yes.
Battery Voltage at least 11.5v.
Not having a meter here to check the voltage, I am wondering if it is the battery that could have caused this problem. My meter will be back with me tomorrow so I can check.
Can the battery voltage be that crucial and cause the No response from the controller?
Do you have any other ideas?
Many thanks in advance.
Jes.

Jes buddy hows it going?
You need to set the baud rate to 9600 in the device manager on the com port you are using (Set this to COM1 or COM2).
You then need to go into the vagcom settings and change the com port to either 1 or 2 whichever you selected in the device manager
You then need to change the start baud rate to 9600
then click test
then click save
then it should work fine

Hi Alex
When you say BAUD rate do you mean Bits per second ? In device manager and Comms port 1 and 2 properties, under the Port Settings tab, they are both showing Bits per second as 9600. Or am I barking up the wrong tree ?
I am also confused with the comms bit aswell. The cable I have is OBD II to USB, it's not a serial port and in fact when I did the configure in VAG com it showed up as in Com3.
Although I am reasonably competent on the pc, I still need guidance and I am unsure about changing this over to comms 1 or 2 as you have suggested.
Thanks.
Jes

Yes thats right sorry in dev manager is bits per second. Its a serial port convertor - its a usb-serial adapter in truth

its not USB as you may think.
If its set to com 3, providing you can select com 3 in vagcom youll be ok

Thanks Alex, Yes, I know what you mean by it being a USB serial adapter. When this cable is connected, it shows in Device Manager, in Ports, as "USB Serial Port (COM16).
Do I need to change this from COM16 to COM3? If so, how? I didn't see anywhere in VAGCOM which would allow me to change the COM. If memory serves me correctly, there is only 1 to 4 so I presume I would need to make the change on the PC in Device manager from COM 16 to COM 3.
Cheers
Jes

Yes it needs to be changed
right click the usb serial port (com16)
click properties
click port settings tab at the top
click advanced
choose COM2 (if possible) otherwise COM1 or COM3 from the list (if they are in use it will say so with (in use) next to the port number)
Click OK twice
And your done:)
Then just select that port in the vagcom settings and everyone is happy

Hi Alex, thanks for your reply.
I have followed your instructions. In the Advanced tab I have a list of COMs, all of which are "in use" up to COM16

COM 17 to COM 256 are not in use
In the COMS and Ports list in Hardware, I have COM1 and COM2 showing and of course the OBD cable (COM16).
I have varying pieces of hardware attached to my pc via USB but was surprised to see 15 COMs "in use".
Can you advise me on what I should do, if I now change the OBD from COM16 to COM2 or COM3, will this not cancel out what was there before? I have tried to find out what hardware is connected to the COMs but I presume I am looking in the wrong area. I have tried right click and properties on each of the items in the list but I am not familiar with the info that is displayed.
e.g. there is no definite description such as "ABC webcam" etc, there are just a series of letters and numbers.
Sorry for making this long winded.
Jes.

I have continued here so if and when I eventually get this fixed , it may help others
Ok, I now have the cable connected and configured to com2 on my pc and it has a successful connection with the VAG com program on my pc.
I have followed the Ross-Tech Wiki guide for TBA....
>Turn the key on but do not start the car.
>Select
>01 - Engine
>Measuring Blocks - 08
>Enter Group 098 (
Note: Some SIMOS or Marelli ECU's use Group 001 such as ADY & AEE engines)
>Go
... As soon as I click Go, the group number reverts to 025 and an error message appears which states..
"...requires VagCom to be registered and activated". I also get the same message when I try Group 001 as suggested in
Note above.
Once this has happened, I cannot proceed any further with the process of the TBA.
I was under the impression that as this program was a free download of VAG-COM Release 409-1 from the Ross-Tech website, there was no requirement for registration and that only applied to the full purchased version.
Can anyone tell me where I have gone wrong please?
Many Thanks
Jes
