Looks like there is a problem with the temp sender i bought on ebay, I will contact the seller and check its the real deal, will also remove & clean the contacts tomorrow.

As for the Barometric Pressure Sensor what does this do?

If I was you dude, I'd forget about the eBay seller/part and just get the sensor direct from VW.

pressure sender is the intake manifold pressure sensor located to the left hand side of the manifold - its quite important in controlling fuel consumption and so on.

EVAP problem is something to do with the fuel hoses (possible fuel filter?) or a fault with the activated charcoal canister (or the solenoid which controls it)

lol yes
i contacted the seller who sent refund straight away saying "It sounds like it may be a faulty sensor. I will refund it. The sensor is made by a company who make non genuine german car parts, these sensors are £30 from vw so any on ebay below about £17 will be non genuine. on my lising it says manufacturer as VW because it refers to compatibility. I have to put volkswagen in this filed when listing under compatibility to select models it fits so they are returned in search results. I purposely haven't used the word 'genuine' or 'OEM' in my description. I've had a look at the other sensors for sale none of the sensors look genuine. "

off to VW again I found this temp sensor number but Im not sure if its correct - 059919501A

cheers

Ah yes thats the EVAP solenoid - you are missing hoses on that, which are very important, and could well explain your high fuel consumption. Behind the drivers headlight lower down should be a round black canister (its further to the right of the power steering fluid in that photo (you cant see it!)). See if its there, and if it has two hoses attached to it.

That will explain alot of problems! as it is important for EVAP control, intake pressure, and fuel regulation.

ill have a look today and see if I can reconnect it with some fuel hose
the other end connects to the throttle body - is that correct?

also could you please confirm if the temp sensor part number - 059919501A - is correct

thanks

Hi

found the hose for the EVAP solenoid and it goes to the round black canister (glad thats still there!)
Someone disconnected the solenoid & joined the pipes together, any thoughts on why this would be done?

Solenoid seems to work when the engine is ticking over, you can hear a clicking noise, anyway Im going to reconnect it and see what happens.

As for the fuel filter changed this and it looks like the original or its been a hell of a long time since it was changed :D

probably trying to mask another problem up which you may well have fixed allready - ensure the joins are tight when you reconnect it, as its a vacuum.

Ah excellent - you made sure you put it in the right way as its directional?

OK
done for today, I managed to....

Refited the EVAP solenoid
changed air filter - (when i got the car it went into the garage my partner uses near her work, they charged me £70 for a look over & oil change and told me the air filter was fine, both parts were grey and one had abit of oil - we wont be using them again!)
changed pollen filter - (this was disgusting and i doubt it has ever been changed, it was black)
changed the spark plugs for NGK PZFR5D-11
changed the fuel filter - also looked like it has never been changed
removed & cleaned throttle body - there was a build up of gunk & grease. When I replaced it the car started fine, from reading the polo forums I was expecting problems
cleaned battery terminals & connectors

TO DO
The fuel gauge is a bit erratic on the new set of clocks from fleabay. The seller was great and sent another set today - no charge.
I hope these ones will be OK, i'll fit them tomorrow.
Transmission fluid to change when I get time
Coolant temp sensor to get from VW

I sold my old beetle because I didn't want to spend every weekend under a car, I hope Im near the end of fixing bits

thanks again all the help & advice
