75W/90 is correct for gearbox fluid for the Polo, had mine done a few weeks back

Thanks guys, I want to try and do this on the wife's 6N2 this weekend while I have some time. I just need to know the amount, it's not listed in the Haynes manual..

I'm not sure on the exact amount mate but when I had mine done they used 2.5 litres.

OK thanks - that sounds like a lot though. My Accord diesel only takes 2.2 litres..

The official amount is 2.7 litres

Better still use Stainless steel bolts on the differential links if anyone has this problem.They'll outlast Titanium ones.

Titanium is stronger though in any case

Titainium is not stronger than steel my friend.Titainium has an excellent strength to weight ratio and is corrosion resistant thats it's benefits over steel.Steel is however alot stiffer and holds amazing tensile strength over Titainium.Think of Titainium as a cross between Aluminium and steel,corrosion resistant & light like aluminium yet stronger than Aluminium.Trust me i found out the hard way when having components on my bikes fail in the past,scares to prove it .

But yes, now you say it, SS would be a better choice and should last forever.

Alot of people think it is,mainly beacuse of it's high price tag and praise it gets .

Just thought I would add that Stainless Steel is not the best of metals to use on cars, especially for engine and gearbox parts. High Tensile Steel is often used far more than Stainless Steel because its a lot stronger. Car manufacturers dont tend to use Stainless on any engines because it doesnt have the same strenght properties of High Tensile Steel.

Replacing Bolts that were HTS with SS is never recommended on any high stress parts.

Stainless does look pretty though

you know i thought it was, but i'd also heard 16v's have 60bhp too and i typed my registration into my insurance website when i renewed and it came back with 60bhp 1.4 s, and mine has 1.4 16v on the engine. I guess i should ring them and tell them its actually 75bhp then!

Sorry Ben but ive got to disagree,Stainless steel is equally as strong as any steel and can even be made stronger.High tensile steel is just a grade of steel designed for different applications,typically the higher grade steel it is the stronger it becomes yet also becomes more brittle.Stainless steel is available in a large amount of grades many being know as high tensile.Afterall it is an alloy,can be made stronger by adding carbon and other metals.Hence why stainless steel is used for things like knives,tools and the such all of which are tough hard wearing objects that require a good strength.

Car manufacturers dont tend to use it because it is more expensive than mild steel,if car manufacturers made eveything too good nothing would need repacing.Although i know Honda have used Zinc plated bolts of some of their cars to withstand the elements better.

Very fair point there Bradley and I do agree with you, car manufacturers certainly wouldnt use stainless on all of their cars due to cost and mild steel/high tensile is perfect for most parts. My dad is a toolmaker and he works with Stainless steel everyday so always rants & raves about how good it is but he does say it certainly isnt as strong as HTS. There are different types/grades of stainless steel and it can be made stronger as the quite correctly said but it will never be as strong as HTS.

One of the most common forms of stainless steel is 2316 which is great for most applications but for example it wouldnt be used on a Car Suspension set up because the bolts will snap under the high stress compared to High tensile Steel.

There is a metal called Stavax which is a fairly low grade of steel which can be hardended and turned into stainless but again it doesnt have the strength properties that HTS does. When the properties of Stainless steel are changed such as the compound of materials and their percentages are altered it can in fact rust which not alot of people know. Some types of Stainless can rust, where as Pure Stainless steel will never rust.
Pure stainless steel is also alot weaker than High Tensile Steel.

Stainless Steel isnt used so much these days for drill bits either because Tungsten Carbide and High Speed Steel are much stronger.

I am not saying I dont like Stainless because I can't rate it enough but if you ask any manufacturing or engineering company they will confirm that it does have the same strenght properties as your average High Tensile Steel.
High tensile steel ofcourse does rust and corrode whereas most forms of Stainless dont but that is another story all together.
