All the 16 RX2s in 4 stud are the same offset. I think it’s ET38.
With a 195/40/16 tyre you could probably put a 10mm spacer on the back quite comfortably

The wheels shown above were off the mk3 golf and the mk3.5 Cabrio golf. They are a straight swap as they are 4x100 pcd.
You can put spacers on the rear if you want but you need to consider buying longer wheel bolts. Also if you have a lowered car the ‘tuck’ may come in useful for clearance so spacers might cause you issues with arch damage etc.

Thanks for your help guys!
I am considering lowering the car but I think I'll get some 16" wheels first and see how they fill the arches. Then if I do decide to lower the car I'll have a better idea of how low I can go, I don't think I'd go very low because I don't think the roads where I live will allow too much then I can think about spacers afterwards if needs be.

It’s a shame to lower GTI’s too much IMO as you can’t drive them as intended. It’s ok if you’ve got a 1.0l 6N2 as it makes no difference
