People need to look beyond the power figures on paper. A remap introduces much more than just engine power.
If calibrated correctly, an engine remap taps into the engine reserve to not only increase power and torque, but improve general drivability and economy. We can iron out flat spots, raise the rev limiter, advance the timing and improve engine response with a sharper throttle.
Funnily enough, although I'm a mobile tuner for Elite Remaps, I live in the Bradford area. I won't comment on any other company, but I can only comment on our own experience.
Personally I run typeaccord.co.uk which is a Honda affiliated forum and have a few years of engine tuning on modern petrol and diesel engines behind me. I joined Elite over a year ago as their business was expanding. The model they operate is to work with the best in the business to share R&D and ensure that every vehicle we tune is getting the best available product from the market.
A lot of our remaps are developed in house (HQ in Pudsey), and some are bought in - but this enables us to cover nearly every vehicle out there.
I tuned our 6N2 1.4 16v AHW last year and whilst the 8bhp isn't a massive gain, it's totally transformed the drive and has given the car a much better bandwidth of power to play with right across the rev range. Whilst not as quick as a GTI, it has that 'poke' now and feels more like a twin cam 16v should.
