Stick to Rockford, Audiobahn (my choice) or Alpine for some 6x9s. Make sure you either mount them on a aqusitc (sp) shelf or at least put some bracing under them so the shelf doesnt flex.
6x9s offer a good substitute for a sub if your not going to bother with an amp but if your going to all the effort of fitting an amp you may as well fit a sub as well.
