Just as a note, if your after the DV noise, this cone in a box wont make any difference as its still sealed like your standard one is now
You will need an open cone to hear the DV.. dump

true, if the cone is sealed in, the noise will be sealed in to.
i have a open cone (K&N) and you hear the blow off sound verry good, but not to noisy.
realise you will never have a sound like a subaru that blows off
with a K03s you will hear it best at around 2500 - 3500rpm and it's a nice "pssjjjjj" sound you will hear.

I found my mpg's were greatly increased when i got rid of my cone filter. Though this could be because i would be toeing it in silly gears at the wrong revs just to hear what i affectionately call ferrchurrr lol.

Well yes it will suck in some warm air but if you keep the air box and cold air feed ( I run a PD160 intake on mine) it should lower this. You've got to remember that the air being sucked in get roasted as it passes through the turbo, so cooling is more important post turbo i.e FMIC.

i have a K&N 57i open cone since the verry beginning i had the car.
never had any problems.
it will suck hot air, but, don't forget you have an intercooler,
so the air going into the engine will be cooled down anyhow.
my car did allways go verry strong, the only real problem on the 1.8T engine is the side mount intercooler.
so put a decent intercooler and you won't have any powerloss or heatsoak
i bet if you put in a airfilterbox and testrive youre car, you won't feel any diffrence from when you have a open cone.
and i doubt it verry hard if you see any changes on a dyno also...
BUT! you have to see that air will get to youre cone, i made 2 flexi pipes from the front grill to my open cone.
so it will get air from outside.
benifit from a open cone is you will hear youre diverter valve blowing
a closed box won't give you that, and is pretty much the same as a putting a cone.

I used to run a jetex cone filter mate. All i did was fit a PD160 intake to the standard air box, and remove the top of the air box. This way, the cone filter sits nicely on top of the box and you still have a nice cold air feed going to it
