Ok so I changed the rear inside lights on my car around 8 months ago, so far no problems....
Why did I do it?
Where I work the car park is really dark and the detail of all lights coming on at once when I unlock the car from a distance was very beneficial, plus I have a four door and occasionally have people in the back, so it is used sometimes...

To take it out you have to give it a good pull, if you look at the pick below it will show where the brackets are, mine had 4 brackets, 2 you can see now and the other 2 are opposite. For this I did not use any tools, just a set of hands....

Then unplug the whole thing, and this is what you are left with:

This is how the back of the unit looks:

Now the easiest way to get to the bulbs is to take out the plastic covers, again 4 brackets, 2 on each side. To get to the brackets I used my house key, just go carefully a little bit on each bracket and you should be ok. Here is a pick with the plastic half way out, note where the brackets are:

The this is the standard bulb:

I used Philips LEDs:

Not a great final pic, looks much better if they lights were off and I was using a proper camera, pics where taken with my phone.

So could you have left the light in place and just removed the lens? I didn't realise that the rears were festoon bulbs, Are yours Canbus bulbs?

Many thanks for the how to

The only ones i have seen with red stitching are the ones from a 6R GTI.
