Hurrah at last, a Polo R.
It does seem strange that its a 2.0 but I think that's because its the only one available at moment. I've seem various snips about a 1.6 engine for the new A3 but at the A3 launch there was no mention by any magazines about this engine, also the rumours about the end of 1.4 Twincharger and that VW would replace it with something cheaper/just as economical.
I think the reason we haven't seen a 1.6 is that they are still testing it. As Rich mentioned, to tie in with WRC rules it would make sense (for all the downsizing reasons) to have a roadgoing 1.6 as well to go in the R model. (Maybe a lower tuned 1.6 is destined for GTI at facelift time as well)
Having the 2.0 in this Polo R Concept is obviously tied up with the A1 Quattro that is having a limited run of 333 models in late 2012. So we'll have to see what happens next as well as waiting another 18months probably

Having a 2 ltr Polo R would open the door for a 2.5ltr Golf R too, just to redress the balance.
Re: Polo R-WRC Street Concept at Worthersee.........Want!!!
The engine used in a rally car does not have to bear any resemblance to a road going model. Homologation rally rules changed quite some time ago.
The 2.0TSI is on the shelf ready to use with big power as standard. The 1.6 used in the Rally car is 300ps. VW have obviously decided the 220ps version of this is the best choice.
Every story I have read seems to indicate that VW will release an even hotter Polo R after this. However, I think that this will remain a concept and the Polo R will be the model that's released.
At least that 6 speed DSG can handle way more torque and remaps are already available for it. Can't wait!!

After going for a long walk, I agree with you deako that 2 litre is a tried and tested engine. Economies of scale for VW as they have it in stock. I know that homolagation rules have changed but I still think a 1.6 is still in development, look at Ford they have their ecoboost engines. Anyway I'm starting to save now for my R

Fair enough, I do have an irrational hate for people who put foglights on for no reason though. Can be very dazzling, does my head in. Really can't see any point in it.AJ_7 wrote:That might offend a few people on these forums mate!!George H wrote:I think it's better for not having foglights.
