thats a fair cop then mate. just drive safe and wait til premiums drop. insurance is a b***h. elephant do mine, got best quote by about £800! including mods. thinking about changing car next year and they only wanted £1200 for a boxster 3.2 auto. I love elephant, really efficient at handling claims as well.

i think weight can make a big difference - was doing delivery driving today for the pharmacy (they're fresh out of pro drivers). R-reg Astra with a 1.6 lump in it.
Compared to the Polo, it wasn't any quicker (didn't feel it, took forever to reach 50...)!!! But then again, it was an estate. Lightly loaded estate (prescriptions..) with one guy and not much fuel, but thats still a lot of metal.
I'd quite looked forward to having a kick in the small of the back when i put my foot down, after seeing the badge on the tailgate, but no. Had to work that Mofo like it was my personal biatch.

(chowed a LOT of petrol too).
It did have a 26-to-the-grand top gear though, very nice for cruising when traffic got in way of the haring (and possibly the slickest gearchange i have ever used).

Mm, weight makes a massive difference. Just having someone in the passenger seat means I have to work my polo harder.. navigating welsh country roads with me, a passenger and two sets of guitar kit (big amps etc..) when I took a trip over there at easter was quite hellish..
My dad's clio is a 1.6, and that does fly along quite nicely.. learnt to drive in that, with 96bhp and a small body that's partly made of plastic

Buying my polo was a bit of a shock to the system really..
As for motorway speeds past 80, I'm sure yours would beat the hell out of mine, but then mine is meant to top out at 88 anyway so there's not much to beat

I would have thought that the main restriction on yours compared to mine is the cat really, rather than the little bit of extra weight..

(Its all in the aerodynamics too... weight has little effect on top speed, at least on the flat)
((its not as if that estate didn't have the power either, it was sheer bulk. sitting on branded 195/55 R15s and alloys, it was all too easy to get spin in 1st off the line (or round corners in 2nd) with somewhat taller gearing than the polo, handling felt a bit squiff at first till i learned to ease off a lot more for the bends - and hitting the brakes when someone decided to mong across the road at a bad time caused the tyres to complain very loudly (antilock, yum) when applying force that wouldn't have made a sound in the dub.. even on 135s!))
