My old 10 plate 1.4 SE Polo had rear brake discs. My current 1.2 TDI (only 3 months old) has the drums. To be honest having both drums and discs on the back I haven't noticed any difference in braking ability

Regards the difference between discs and drums on the rear. I have a 9n 3dr tdi twist and upgraded the running gear to full 9n3 gti spec courtesy of a gti that had died after two weeks. First to be upgraded was the rear from the drums to discs what a difference it made the car was braking more from the back than it was at the front. I for one will never have drums again. Once I had upgraded the front to 288mm the balance was evened up with the car having phenomenal stopping power. I have every time I have bought a new car in the last ten twelve years always upgraded the brakes to whatever the top spec was available. Why they don't put the same on all the cars I don't know as it would make them all safer and the parts cheaper.( ok wishful thinking especially from the stealers)
