What do you mean by remove and for what purpose?
RCD 310 to RCD 510 anyone?
This is from the manual of my current rcd 310

Obviously I don't want to be going to my dealer if its something that can be done on vcds

Actually I think I've miss understood. It means removed for reference purposes I think. As soon as I put the new radio in it will store the new code over the top of the old one.

When you put the new radio in, itll ask for the code
The code for the original radio is always stored in the car, so it doesnt need a code if refitted
If you sell the radio on, youll need to provide the code with the radio

Codes are easy enough to get hold if you lose them, dealer can either retrieve or plenty of decoding services on ebay.
Re: RCD 310 to RCD 510 anyone?
I've done it.
Just take the radio surrounding plastic, 4 or 5 torx srews (T20 I believe), take the radio out, put the new one, srews and plastic on.
Probably less than 10min... Assuming you have the code for the new one, it will work immediately.
Before:

After:

My Polo doesn't have rear speakers, so I've coded the radio to take out the Fader feature.... but thats optional.
