so is the key in the ignition equivalent to the "acessory mode"??
Weird. Mine will work without the key because I don't have an ACC position, and have to turn the radio on and off. How did you manage that?
Karl.

its 3 positions.
Off
ignition on
starter
When the its "off" i can play my radio.
But as soon as I take the key out the radio (pioneer) switches off
wont switch on unless the keys in the ignition.
when i take the key out the radio beeps 3 times if i leave the face on.
So is the key in the ignition like an accessory setting?

very curious, its something to investigate. similar to how the steering lock won't engage (mk3 ONLY - just a safety hint

) until you remove the key, though it doesnt automatically let go when you put it back in. ((unlike a family friend's starship-like saab 95...))
cant give any input to this myself, as i realised before i installed my stereo that key didn't have an accesory position and was likely to cut ALL power to the radio when i turned it off and set its little dip-switch to "constant power" rather than "key control"
cuz i like having the option of letting passengers screw with my presets and laugh at my tapes when i have to nip into the service station, without the risk of them driving away if i'm too long in the toilet

I know my HU can do that, but because of the lack of an ACC position it won't work. I'm puzzled now as to how yours does that...

any chance the ignition barrel has been adapted from a later mk. e.g 6n, 6n2! its the same with them, when the key is removed, the radio goes off, but u can still turn the radio back on without the key being in the ignition!

They key DEFINITELY needs to be in the lock for my radio to switch on.
I can use the radio with the engine off
No key in lock, no radio
As soon as the keys taken out the radio switches off and "BEEP BEEP BEEP!"
The ignition barrels not been modified AFAIK and I still have the original vw key!
