When asked what makes me stick with VW Group products, the answer is simple, I have bought VCDS and Carista and quite a few useful tools to handle some of VW Group cars troubles, if I changed marques I would need to start from scratch, though if I bought a Toyota I might be able to throw all my tools away?

I've owned a 1200 Anglia, a 1300 Escort MK1, a couple of Escort MK2 Ghia 1600s, a Escort MK3 1.6 Ghia, an Orion MK1 Ghia 1.6 Injection, an Orion MK2 Ghia 1.6 Injection, a VX Cav GSI 2000 16V 4X4 before moving to VW Group products. Wife has owned a 1.1L Fiesta MK2, 1.1 Ghia Fiesta MK3, 1.6SI Fiesta MK3FL/MK4 before to moving to VW Group products.

The first car to come close to the 1991 VX Cav GSI 2000 16V 4X4 was the car I have now, a 2013 Audi S4 - these GSI 4X4 Cavs were that good in my eyes, and they lived well below most people's radar! I'm retired now so the S4 is really just something that I wanted within my lifetime and I grabbed a very low mileage one with 6MT before my choice was removed and I'd have to go for an auto box one that would have lots of money needing spent on it. The VW Passat 4Motion was okay, just a bit disconnected from the driving experience, it did every thing I asked of it over a period of 13 years from new. I knew a few stories about the earlier Polo 1.2TSI 8V EA111 engine from people at work who had been let down when mainly their SEATs needed to visit the garage too often, so I deliberately aimed at getting my wife a 1.2TSI 16V EA211 engined Polo when they appeared, maybe not brand new, but that is how it turned out - like you a SA built car.

He he, I ran a Vauxhall X Cav GSI 2000 16V 4X4 for just under 12 months.

To be absolutely honest, it was way back in day when I was young and stupid, I got caught for speeding twice in about 6 months. Not because I was that much of a hooligan, just because for it's day it was deceptively quick. Frist time I was pulled I was let off with a caution. The reason being the new traffic cars they had just had were Cav Gsi 4X4 and he said "yeah they are quicker that you think!" I kid you not. Second time I was just stupid, I was actually on my way to a dental appointment and was running late, so pushing a bit, so collected 3 points for my stupidity. Upshot was I thought if I keep this I will end up collecting more points and not be able to insure anything nice, so traded it in against a New Fiesta 1.6S (My first ever new car)

I here what you say about collecting tools. That said I don't think we are very far away from the end of DIY motoring. Every generation of new car is more complex than the rest. I don't think we are that far away from when the check engine light illuminates it flashes up quotes to fix it from the garage.

Just a little follow up.


Booked my Polo in for a service with an independent VAG/BMW chappie. Not sure what it's called, but he has the latest VW diagnostic kit so that he can check and download the latest VAG software versions from the factory. As part of the service I asked him to run a full diagnostic ( 0 Faults logged) and check what software version my car was running.

Anyway long story short, mine was a couple of versions behind so he updated it to latest version. Apparently one of the patches is associated with uneven tick-over. Upshot is the tick-over speed has been increased by a tiny bit from 600 to 680rpm. As if by magic the "Tick" has also disappeared.


Very knowledgeable chap. I've broached the possibility of him doing my cam chain in the non too distant future.

I have the same noise on the low fuel pump for my 1.4 TSI engine.

Today ai made ECU update at SKODA service to the latest version 9970. Now the idle speed is 680 rpm (in my opinion I would set it to 700 rpm where all the noise disappears) but the noise at the low fuel pump is still there ...but not too loud.
Anyway, it is an improvement which solves many issues.
