i second that, losts of speedos need sorting!

Most speedos I should imagine are between 5-7mph out especially at those speeds.

My mate had 145mph out of a polo gti engine, on a ROAD ANGEL... NOT a spedo.
Also, those speeds are with half load, MR smarty pants... so HA, meaning the cars got half petrol and half passenger capasity!

well my speed was sitting at 120 on the speedo with one light passenger and about a quarter of a tank of petrol
i'm not saying the speedo is accurate but i'm certainly not making it up, why the hell would someone do that? It doesnt make you seem cool having a high top speed, top speed means f**k all. Anyone can put their foot down and go fast, it's how you corner and gear change that matters

You will get 123 out of a GTi and no more, anything above that is your speedo that is telling fibs.
Your speedo must fall withing the +10% / -1% up to 70mph range for the uk, for the tyres the car was supplied with as new. so as far as that goes it could read 150 at 120 real speed and its still ok.
The software in the ECU however is accurate to a greater degree and the cars true speed is only governed after that by the tyre circumference. The software limitation is 200km/h, and you cannot exceed that unless you have 'fiddled' with it! The top speed is set my the manufacturer at the top speed which the engine at the bottom end of manufacturing tolerance can achieve. Since all engines produce a different output. Some might get 140 some might get 125, but they can give 125 minimum.
Its all down to some programmer... probably called dave.

It uses the GPRMC GPS nmea standard, which contains a velocity vector. If you look at this vector you can see that sometimes it reads as much as 20mph, when you are not moving at all. Occasionally in the plane I find the groundspeed is backwards on the gps when I am being refuelled.
the position and speed have an accuracy of 15m RMS, and could be 300m out easily, the speed could be very wrong especially in built up areas or where the Horizontal DOP is high. Basicallly its a guide, it could save your license, but lets consider one thing, 123Mph or 140mph, eitherway your license is history!
