Dan - Yeah i am worried about making my decision, then seeing the other option on the road and thinking i've made the wrong choice

I've given the 312mm brake upgrade a search and again like the remap, for the price, they're a must!

Can't see myself being near Peterborough anytime in the near future unfortunately :( Thanks for the offer though!

Alex - I rarely use the motorway or go on long journeys, to be honest. But i used to hate it in my little 1.2 Corsa how it'd be revving it's nuts off at like 4.5k+ at motorway speeds, was annoying! I know that isn't really high revs, but would be nice if it cruised at lower!

Whatever new car i do get, it won't be staying standard for long! :D I'm definately swaying towards the GTI. I'm on a Mini forum too, so it isn't too biased :P. I like the tunability of the GTI!

I work on the weekends mate which is a shame, but thanks for the offer! :)

Have you got a link to your thread on the Mini forum? Will be interesting to see what they have to say about the Polo 8)

just been out for a spin mate, 70mph in a stage 1 mapped gti you'll be sitting at about 2800 rpm

Get a GTi. As stated, handling aint great standard and neither are the brakes. But a remap, 312mm brakes and lowered your onto a winner.

As for driving on motorway which i'm doing a lot of lately, , 70mph your looking at 2800rpm and i get 46mpg on a 5o mile journey. Thats with a CC remap! :)

I'm only a 30 min drive up M1 if you want taking for a spin!

the map isn't going to affect the revs at a certain speed as that is down to gearing

i told myself that i wouldn't mod the polo when i got it but there are a few choice mods that need to be done to make it so much more :D

_williams_ - <3000rpm sounds good to me :)

M@Turner - I only used to get around 45mpg on my 1.2 Corsa, so getting the same on a 1.8T would be great!

It seems that upgrades are readily available, so even if suspension/brakes are only 'OK' that doesn't bother me.

I might just take you up on that offer ;)

Dink - If i were to get one, i don't think it'd be remaining standard for too long :D

I disagree with that. I've driven plenty of high performance cars in my time and the little Polo, as sold, is very impressive for what it is, imo. Very good mechanical grip and predictable, neutral handling.

Yes it has a tall ride height and small (by today's standards) wheels but if you understand anything about roll centres, unsprung weight and suspension travel, these are good traits to have 8)

IMO, the standard damper rates are a tad hard on the high speed compression, but the rebound feels spot on for the spring rates and vehicle weight.

As for the mini.... ghastly things. Driven mostly by girls because they're cute and boxy and made by BMW (under license by someone else!) for that extra snob factor. The Cooper S with the supercharger and sports suspension + 18" wheels is probably the noisiest, most uncomfortable car I've ever had the displeasure to drive....and I thought my mate's Evo 9 FQ360 was harsh and rough! Totally over rated cars (imo) and common as pig muck.

What makes me laugh is the people who buy them think they're getting a BMW, but they're not :D The current Cooper S even has a french engine in it and the interior quality is nothing like as good as the Polo's.

I think i've pretty much decided on the GTI :)

Minis are just too common :(

Going to be on the look out for one over my easter holidays and hopefully get one bought!

Appreciate all the input :D

Didn't mean to sound overly harsh about the mini by the way, I'm not a biased car fan and the Mini must be reasonably good to sell in such huge volumes, but it just did nothing for me, except get on my nerves!!

I think it's like the Audi TT phenomenon. Audi release a nice looking coupe, but all the hair dressers, footballers, estate agents kept buying them, and before you knew it, the roads were infested with the bloody things! They're just moving fashion accessories.

The Polo is a much rarer, niche market car. The people who buy them know what they want, rather than following the other sheep. Much to my surprise, a lot of people aren't buying them because they're a cheaper, smaller Golf, but because they realise the potential of a ~ 1150kg car with a punchy 1.8T motor in it :D

My main reasons for wanting one :D I've never once seen a Polo GTI (1.8T)!

Also, the insurance is less on the GTI, which means i can spend more on buying the car itself :)

Sooo, i've got next week off to go and look at a couple of GTI's i've seen within my budget.

Is climate control worth it? I've seen a 56plate(2006) GTI with climate control, but 25000 miles on it. But i've also seen a 56plate(2007) without climate control and only 15000 miles on it...Both for the same price. Worth sacrificing low miles for climate control :? ?

Can't wait to see what deal i can get out of the dealer :D

Climate is good - i dont have it in my Polo but do have it in the Audi .... and it is good... set to say 23 deg C and thats what you have... without climate... i'm constantly turning the hot/cold knob ....

now if you were looking at one with leather ... thats what I would look for .. I have it and love it...
