first number (195) is the width of the tyre, second number (45) is the profile.
it's illegal if the tread pattern of the tyre is visable out of the arches, ATS Cups dont have that much poke so you'll be fine.
i wouldn't stress about tyres too much, there's 3 sizes you want to consider on a 15" wheels thats 7j wide.
195/45 - the most standard size, looks good enough, plenty of tyre, if you really want a low stance they'll scrub though.
165/50 - lovely stretch, not too much in my eyes but a little too much for some who prefer more tyre. you'll be able to get a nice low stance on these.
185/45 - a happy medium of the two. but i havent seen a great deal of evidence with them to suggest what these are capable of.

aahh thank you haha i get it now (ish)
i really like the look of 165/50, but just abit worried about any problems i might get with the stretch? like if the camber is off a bit, it could increase my tyre wear massively :S which im not liking as i cant keep on buying tyres every few months!
with the 195/45 i could probably get away with for now with good wear but later this year i'll be lowering so might be worth not getting these if the 165/50 are safe and grippy

only been able to find one tyre in the 185/45 so not too confident about those!
so if the 165/50 are good to use and dont wear real quick then ill be going for them
thanks for the help btw!

only nankang make 185s, thats why you only found one. i'm getting some for my 8j monos soon.
i wouldn't worry about 165s and they're stretch, if i owned 7s i'd certainly ride them on my GTi, i wouldnt call it an unsafe stretch for small engines.
as for the wear, if your camber is still a little out it'll wear down your tyres unevenly no matter what profile and width they are. if this is the case you've just gotta keep your eye on them and switch them round (thats what i have to do)

So what are the relative advantages/disadvantages of a wide or tall tyre?

Wider tyre - more grip as there's more surface area on that touches the floor. Bigger profile is more comfortable and handles better in some way I think?
You can't really got bigger than 45 profile on a polo though unless your compensating with a narrower wdith eg. 165/50.

ok so there's a bit of a change of plan
im leaving my polo as is for now, and selling up in early november...for a 6n2 gti

as i've got some savings and should have a year no claims bonus so insurance will be alot cheaper..
but im left with a set of loverly 15" ATS Cups.. ive been looking around and havent found annny pictures of gti's or any 6n2 with cups on em.. so i could either sell those and get some bbs splits or keep the cups. only thing is im wondering if i should get 16s on the gti instead of 15s.. and if i get 16s what do people recommend? any help would be awsome

there's a fair few 6n2s with cups on, when i'm on my pc next i'll have to dig some out for you.
with 16s there's just as much choice as 15s really, i'd look at something around 7-7.5j wide, et30.
if i was you id get onto a set of stock audi wheels and get some adaptors, original and sweet

cool, that would be great, would prefer to keep the cups as i looove em and wont have much funds after getting the gti lol, maybe after a year or so
is there any bits to make sure i look at in any gti's i go see? aside from the general things
