I usually get 490-520 miles out of a tank with a 1.4 SE. 75% of the driving is motorway/ fast A road. My avergae mpg per tank according to the trip comp is about 62-59mpg. Thats driving at a decent 60-65mph as I cant get much faster on that A road (A42) due the rush hour traffic. I use Shell Vpower and I have cruise control.

Offically they are 35.3mpg urban 60.1 extra urban and 47.9 combined. Im not sure why my car is so frugle, to be honest it was a shock to me when I started this new commute 2 months ago I expected a much lower figure.

Ok, so based on a UK Gallon, (4.55litres to the gallon) that's around the 8.4L /100km, based on you filling up 40 litres or 8.75 gallons. If you're not fanging it everywhere, thats a pretty high figure! Well, for the last tank anyway. I drive under the ISO standard test average speed (40kph average speed) apparently and give the car a bit on the odd traffic light get away or traffic gap, maybe once a week go for a 50% spirited drive and now, after 3200kms (2000 miles) I am generally averaging around 7.1-7.4 L/100kms, aka 39-38.1mpg.

I used to get slightly worse than that with my old Mk4 Golf which had the 1.6l AKL engine....

That to me sounds pritty damn good. Im usually gettin around 280-290 miles to £50 of shell, which for a performace petrol i thinks pritty good. 1.8T 20v polo gti (stage 1 revo) used to struggle gettin 200 miles, and was set to run on shell vpower. :(

Think you need to buy a dirty diesel if you think thats bad. :D

It's a fine line between performance and economy, you need to remember you've opted for a high performance car. The MPG figures, to say it performs as it does are very very good. There aren't many cars out there that perform the same as a Polo 6R GTI and have the same or even similar mpg figures without getting a high powered diesel.

I agree, my GTI is averaging 42-45 MPG per fill up which is amazing considering the performance which does get used when required. To make a significant improvement over these new petrol engines the only model worth going for is the BlueMotion.

Definatley, I have a 1.2 TSi and on a combined cycle i'm averaging about 48 but I do tend to give it some stick every so often :D So for a GTi to produce those figures I think is amazing!
