Some people manage without it, but there is special tool, T10530, which fits into the hole securing the coil pack to the head (after the screw is removed) and makes it much easier to get a straight, controlled pull. The tool is very expensive as a genuine VAG part, but you can buy Chinese copies for about £10 sterling.
When you said the tool was very expensive I thought… oh how much could it be it’s just an ignition coil puller tool. My local VW parts dealer wants $480 AUD for it LOL. Go VW.

The Chinese copies will work just nicely, my slightly more expensive Laser Tools (a UK tool provider) sells what looks a lot like the China knock off ones on ebay, maybe Laser Tools have now changed their supplier for that tool from Europe, to China!

I bought my tool from AliExpress for about £10. I posted a picture earlier in this thread. Maybe I was lucky, but it looks just like the pictures of the genuine VW tool, and works just fine.

Like I said, I'm sure it will, not exactly a bit of rocket designing went into these, so easy for a 3rd party to produce.
