they asked if my insurance covered me driving other cars, and if so then I can use my own insurance, otherwise I'm on their insurance....
so why on earth should I risk my own insurance???

Sounds the same as me a little earlier in the post...... They told me the part is on back order as there ain't any in the UK and the order can take anything from 2 days to a Month!!!! Hence i also got a loan car cos mine was in bits in the workshop when i went in to get mi snooper out etc.....Great my cars been in for the recall today, vw just phoned up to say that when they were replacing the part something got broken in the pedal box and no its undriveable, and they'll need to keep the car until they've got the part. tbh it hasn't suprised me in the least, i'm least i'm gettin a loan car, a 1.2 S, should be fun

If you are going in for the recall, then the VW dealer should be supplying you with a loan car. Whether you are charged for this is at their discretion. 
The replacement of the pedal box assembly means the clips can break - this is a known issue. Beware as you may have a loan car for a while if your dealer has none in stock.
If you're having the assembly replaced, I would suggest you have the clutch cable replaced too. Due to the extreme bend in the way the cable is fitted into the engine bulk head, it would be worth while as the wear in the inner cable housing and the cable itself can give the impression the clutch is still heavy. A new cable will make the clutch feel lighter.
My clutch cable has been replaced already, prior to the recall, and it made a huge difference. 
You will need to pay for a new clutch cable though as it's not a part of the recall assembly. 
If you've had a pedal box replaced in the past, you need to ensure you have your pedal box replaced anyway, in line with the VW recall.
If you don't, then you are only jeopardising your own safety. 
Any VW dealer who doesn't replace it with the NEW supply of pedal box is breaking the manufacturers rules on a safety recall - and remember this is a SAFETY recall so there are no excuses for not replacing the whole assembly with a new one.
Mine is going in Tuesday. I was told it should take only 2 hours which sounds reasonable considering it's only the pedal box and a few switches. Still, I have a loan car at no charge.

Cheers for the info morrismen........Mine went in last Thursday as mentioned above and i'm unlucky enough to be one of the people affected by the broken clips problem. The dealer said there were none in the UK at the moment and they are waiting for them on back-order from VW.
they said they couldn't give a time-scale which is fair enough but did say that they have known back-order items come within a couple of days.... but also anywhere as long as a month too !!!!
Any idea how much i would be lookin' at for the clutch cable to be replaced if mine does look to be worn??

Cost
I wouldn't worry too much about the cost as a cable can't be more than £20 surely? I got mine under warranty so don't know the actual cost. Anyway, if you've got the original clutch cable in and you've done 40,000 miles or so, it's probably due another as the heavy manual (non hydraulic) clutch will eventually break the cable at its weakest point in the bulk head. I'd suggest you buy one to appreciate the difference it makes.

Oh crap. The VW Dealer called me today saying I'd have to keep my courtesy car tomorrow (Weds) too as to put in the new foot pedal box re the recall, they've had to drop the steering column and the dashboard out! Ugg. What a mess it'll be in My poor car! I hope it all goes back together again.

Got to give them some credit here for checking this out first before taking things apart - word must have reached the dealers from VW about the clip problem.
Did get my drivers side electric window fixed while it was in, which was a bonus

I've got to go back in too this next week or so cos i'm booked to have my wheels referb'd in a couple of weeks and if the car is still in the dealers i'm gonna have to ask them to take mi wheels off so i can take them to the wheel people then take them back the next day to be put back on again....I wouldn't mind but i booked the wheels in during May and the waiting list for the same day service was 2 1/2 months!!!!!

Clearly, there is a discrepancy here.
My dealer has spent 8.5 hours on it so far and it's still not finished.
Either the dealers are not provided with "How to do it" details or VW have seriously under-estimated the amount of work involved.
What I don't understand is why the steering column and dash have to come out to put in a pedal box?
The other problem with the steering column dropping out is that the bolts are 'sheer' bolts are therefore have to be drilled out and replaced.
I am now getting seriously worried that my GTI will never be the same again

I warned my dealer in service about the clips breaking, so if they break them putting it back together, then I guess I'll be keeping the loan car. I am awaiting the call to say it's all done. After the dash coming out and steering column being chiselled out, then I'll be checking all the dash lights and switches still work before I leave the garage - I don't want to have to go back again with another list of things to do.

Perhaps it used to be a diesel and VW put a petrol engine in it?!?!? Still it has fairly good acceleration, but poor performance top end, it rattles and seems to be based on a Citroen 2CV (snarf) - I'll be pleased to get my GTI back now

My Polo was in all day when I had my pedal box fixed up - I dropped it off at 8am and could have collected it at lunchtime, so the work was only about 4-5hrs tops.
My recall was last Wednesday. Since then I've had no worries with dash lights/gear selection/clutch operation/etc. My key's battery died though, but I think thats unrelated
