want to know about Revs on my mk2. so....

CALLING ALL MK2 OWNERS WITH 1.0 4speed 'box

doing 70MPH, what is your revs??? in 4th gear??

need to know weva my speedo is in-accurate, or the RPH guage?!

Well, mine's a 5 speed but it's a close ratio so my 5th = your 4th.

2nd: 45mph @ 6,000rpm
3rd: 63mph @ 6,000rpm
5th: 60mph @ 3,300rpm
70mph @ 3,800rpm

2nd and 3rd will be different, but you should be looking at 60mph @ 3300rpm and 70mph at 3800rpm.

It will be pretty high, it's a little engine and a 4 speed box, it's not going to be cruising along on tickover

On my 1.3 Ranger its about 3800rpm in 4th at 70 and about 3200 in 5th. Its great on the motorway apart from not beeing too hot on the acceleration side of things, beats my old mk3 1.3 CL though.

well i cant say for mega certain they're the same as each other, but it's very very likely

my 1.0 4 speed mk3, in 4th, with revcounter fitted, gives 4000rpm at 70mph almost exactly. it's over-reading on the speedo by a few percent though, and the more exact maths of that* make it equal to around 16.75mph/1000rpm (ish )

in otherwords...
1800rpm at 30mph (good for trotting round town)
2700rpm at 45mph (still alright, good efficiency down fun back lanes - close to mk3 peak torque)
3300rpm at 56mph (still turns in close to 60mpg - close to mk2 peak torque)
3700rpm at 62mph (perhaps why it's surprisingly good on the 0-100k & nipping round folk on a packed m'way - heading towards overtaking revs already)

and about 4125rpm at 70mph ... you were wondering why it sounded frantic, no?
the most incredible thing to my mind is that it's doing almost 4500 at 75mph / 120k but the 44mpg economy figure in the manual for this speed appears reasonably accurate.

81mph / 130k at 4800
5000rpm gives you 84mph, just about
5200 (mk3 alleged peak power**) - 87mph (top speed ~91...)
5600 (mk2 ditto**) - 94mph (top speed ~88...)

6000 (as high as you really wanna take it, ever) - 100.5mph
6300 (mk2 limiter, where fitted / recc. max engine speed) - 105mph
6500 (mk3 limiter) - 109mph

Yeah... This car seriously needs a 5th fitting if you're ever going to take it much outside of town (says he, having rocketed about in it at 80-95 for more than 2 years - its fun, but hardly relaxed, and does make you worry!). Finding some way to jam an 8P 5th pre-diff ratio onto it would result in about 20.2/1000, which would be just about perfect for cruising with this engine (~2750@56, ~3450@70) and still getting it up a little past 80.

Scary thing is that compared to a lot of 60s and 70s motors, it's high geared. Now you know the reason for the 50mph fuel economy speed limit (still persisting on the aston expressway for probably similar reasons)

* cant remember the exact figures any more, just the result. did the whole timing-it-between-motorway-mileposts-at-constant-speed thing.

they're probably dead accurate --- what figures are they showing you?
for ages i thought i was getting about 18.5/1000 - kind of disappointed when i found out..
it's not that kind of 4 speed where it's still reasonably high in 4th and everything's more spread out, it's just a standard fizzy 1-litre 5 with the top gear missing.
some days i pity those who got the standard, even closer (5th really did = 4th) 5 speed and just wanna cruise not slam it up through the gears all the time... though the GT-styled close 5 wouldnt be a bad compromise (actually is about 18 or 19/1000)

Nah, the close 5 speed's great.. much easier to keep it in the power band, and if you don't want to be constantly changing gears it's perfectly happy to skip the odd gear here and there like a 4 speed Cruising's a different matter obviously.. but then, cruising's never really going to be a comfortable experience unless you get a 1.3..

s'what i meant if you want it to be nippy then it's probably great

you could still cruise ok with a +20% 5th gear (what the 1.3CLs are like) but you'd of course have to accept a fair performance drop out. Even the astra ain't rapid in 5th.. but it goes along alright. guess with the 1.0 you'd discover a whole brace of new inclines that you can't get up in top
(whereas with just the 4th there's a large number that you can't get up *quickly* in top)

suppose the close 5th / 4th are ok for lower speed cruising, but at those points you need less power anyway and could get away with a high gear - and do, say, a moderate 3000rpm at 62mph instead of a more feisty 3600... some difference that!

well..... my reading is 4400rpm @ 70..... so i dont know wot is out???

next test is to get sumone doing 70 next to me!! and c wot im doing!! hehehe!!

Just borrow a hand held GPS tracker off someone and read your speed off that - it'll tell you your actual speed rather than the slightly high deliberately adjusted speedo reading.

4400 vs 4125, not a hugenormous difference
that's less revs than you *should* have at 75, so i'd say your rev counter is maybe over-reading a little and your speedo quite accurate?

done a little test.... and i think the speedo is ok... 1-2 MPH off.... but i think its the Rev..... as it idles correctly, around the 1000rpm area, so im gonna have a rumble in my garage for another Rev counter... sure i got one sum where! haha

Get a digital gunsons one from Halfords, take it carefully out of the box, don't get it dirty, use it, then take it back the same day packed back as perfectly as when you got it with some lame excuse as to why you picked that up instead of a 5-litre bottle of oil or something

remember to write down how much out it is at each rpm, as the counters in polos are digital themselves (running off the counts per second* of the crankshaft turning) and so with any luck it'll either be a constant number, grow proportionally, or grow-shrink-grow / t'other way round as it goes round the dial, all being easy to correct for either with tweaking the needle on it's stick (the first one) or re-jigging the dial backing yourself (the other 2).... rather than being a bit variable and temperamental like an analogue one might be after all this time

* super techincally, it's the time-per-revolution not vice versa

rite..... well, im not all that technical!! haha. so im gonna have a play with the clocks wen i get a min.... cos the 1st rev counter i had was WELL off.... apparently i was doing 6K @ 60MPH!! hahaha!! and i knew that wasnt rite coz it was idleing at 2.5K!! i think iv jus had a couple of dodgy clocks!! ill have a gander in the garage, and holla at u all!!

I always thought that the mk2 gets its Rev counter reading off of pulse's from the Distributer, For every 4 'sparks' eqauls one Revolution of the engine.

The mk3 gets its feed from the ECU

Yeah, it does, so in theory it should be pretty accurate. Problem comes if you have stuck the needle on in the wrong place though

Btw, don't just write off the 2.5k idle onto the rev counter.. mine used to idle at 2.5k when it had warmed up, idle point and auto choke on the old carburettor were horribly set up, didn't realise how bad it was until I fitted the rev counter..
