Petrol gauge wont work??

Hi all,

I posted something similar to this in the mkIV section of the forum, but I thought with it being electrical, this would be a better palce......

My 1998 MKIV 1.4 CL, Open Air (S reg) has a problem with the petrol gauge. The majority of the time, it reads a quarter of tank, even though the tank is completely full, (I know this because when I filled it up, the petrol p1ssed all over my shoe!)
The gauge makes a ticking noise, like a windup toy, and the needle 'judders' like its stuck, in time with the ticking - this only happens on startup, and when turning off the engine. I've taken the gauge pod out, to have alook around the back, and all I found was a single cable, and a lot of circuitry. At the moment, I'm thinking the worst case might be a new gauge pod - which wont be cheap I'm sure??

Anyone else have any ideas??

Thanks alot

Matt

i think you might be looking at a new gauge mate you can always check the sender by plugging in a variable resistor into sender wires on the fuel pump vary the resistance up and down and the needle should go up and down.but im sure you can buy the gauge seperate to the rest of the pod.
