Possiably running on 3 cylinders?

My dad was driving the car around the other day and aparently it felt like it was only pulling on 3cylinders. Is there anyway I can find out if there are problems?
I'm still yet to fit yoof's AFRM, I just havent got around to it, so I don't know if it's fueling problems.
Although the ammount I ragged it when I had 2 good arms (the one's in plaster for 4more weeks) was silly, but the welsh roads call for it with their stupid corners.

Take the car somewhere where there is a nice hill to climb, or up a slip road or something.
If you're firing on 3, you will definately notice it then. You will feel it miss when the engine is labouring.

Thing is it only seemed to do it for like 2seconds, if that. Oh and it started back firing something stupid! :O

If it's backfiring it's igniting the fuel whilst the inlet valve is still open.. checking the ignition timing and firing order would be a good place to start.. have you been doing anything with the ignition system recently?

If you've not touched the timing recently then I'd suggest you check the condition of your HT leads, and rotor arm and dizzy cap.

That would be the most likley cause then, I need to get all new leads and a new dizzy in the summer. The car's due to have them done but I just havent got the cash at the moment.

Leads will set you back £1-2 per lead, and the dizzy cap is about £3 I think.. a small but worthwhile investment if yours are a bit suspect

I really want some decent leads, well ones that will do the job decently. Nothing too fancy

too see which lead or plug is the problem run the engine at idle then remove each plug lead in turn (use insulated pliers) the lead that makes no differance to the idle is the one at fault

Beru stuff from GSF is OE quality and more than up to the job. Works fine on my 156bhp G40! And really not that expensive either.

Even so, you shouldn't be paying much more than a tenner for a set of high quality leads, unless you're going for a set of proper high performance ones.. which probably won't make a great deal of difference unless you've done a lot of work elsewhere on your engine..

do you possiably know the part numbers? Theres about 10 to choose from, and 3 for the 1.3Polo 84.

High performance leads are b*******s IMO anyway.
Dizzy cap is about £7.50+VAT, £2.75+VAT for rotor arm, and the leads are £17.50+VAT - that's roughly what you'll pay from GSF for them. I got 'em trade, but they were Beru bits and good quality.

92132 DISTRIBUTOR CAP PO 1/90 > Bosch Type With Shroud = £7.50
92210 IGNITION ROTOR ARM-BOSCH PO 1.3 55 BHP MPi 10/90 >12/92 = £2.50
92621C IGNITION LEAD SET PO 1.05 / 1.3 91>94 = £24.50
I think that's right anyway. There are cheaper sets of leads on there, but think they might be Mk2 only. If you ring GSF they're normally pretty competant - I've found them to be anyway.
