Roof flexing/dents??

Just remembered a problem my Mums car had from new...
Whenever the weather got really hot, there would quite litterally be dents/flexing all over the roof. We thought it was the next door neighbours cat jumping off the roof of there garage (cue massive argument with neighbours). Anyway, my Dad was looking at the dealers unregistered stock on a hot day and he found that nearly every single MK5 had this roof flexing.
VW told him it was that the actual roof insulation had moisture stuck in it and whenever the roof was hot it would cause them to flex. They said it could be done under warranty but in the end never was.
Just wondering if anyone else had this problem or if it was ever rectified?
My mums car was a 'Y' chassis March 2000 model.
