Ok I know there's a fault with windows going down - and you need a repair kit from VW.
However, my drivers window drops fine but struggles to go back up - any ideas ?? It's getting very frustrating in this cold weather !!!

I'm guessing it has too much resistance coming up. At times the window-holders break partially, causing the window to sit skewed, making it difficult to slide up. Or, the window mechanism just needs a good lube. This worked on the GF's Golf. Worth a try, since it's free!

My window had the same prob until i kept my finger on the up postion until it went up. All of a sudden steam and sparks started to fly out

and this burnt off the insulating rubber off the wiring loom connecting between the elec window motor and the power lead behind the door card. this caused the two wires to touch each other hence causing the problem. i cant obtain this wire so now i taped the wire up with insulating tape thousands of times

it works but the wire goes red hot so im not sure whats gone wrong. i have disconnected it just in case it blows up, but now i cant open my window at all. any ideas whats wrong??
after the wire blew and i taped it back up the window goes up even slower than it did before and this was very slow as well.

I'd say the motor is on its way out, OR the window rail / cable system is shot. Since both are integrated, it doesn't really matter - replace one means replacing both.

i had a look just now properly. it seems that the back bit of the motor gets quite hot. (red circled bit below)

click for bigger picture
when i press the push the window switch to go up it goes up then stops midway and can go back up by rocking the switch and using my hands force to force it up

. the rail system seems okay, however there is a slight crunching noise from it as well when i tried to have a look at the wire, it now has a kink in it mayb thats why.
when you mean replacing ones like replacing both, do you mean both come together, i found 1 on ebay that is the motor itself, not the railing. im not sure.

Wait, I meant to say that the motor and the winding unit (teethed wheel etc) come as one, it's the unit you've pictured there. The rail/mechanical bit comes seperately. If it's getting hot, perhaps the window has too much resistance coming up? Try lubing the runners, see if it makes a difference. At times the window will sit crooked, making it difficult to wind up so check for broken window guiders.

na the guiders are tight on the window and are fine so are the rails. I believe the problem is either the motor or the wire which is pulled or relased by the teethed thing?? the problem lies somewhere there. i have lubed with some grease, wd-40 and vasalene

no difference. it sometimes completely stops working and the clicking sound when the switch is pressed also goes away. the switch is working fine i beleive.
after u switch the ignition off and on again it resumes but then the same prob happens again after one or two open and closes. even when the window closes it doesnt make the closing noise just goes up slowly and quietly and packs up halfway. any more ideas speedlaw?? what could be the prob?

Well i sorted the window now, i got a bit angry so took the glass and all the bits and bobs of the electric window out. Cleaned up all the muck, got a can of wd-40 sprayed all the cogs up, lubed the runners, and whilst doing this i found that there was the cable digging in to one of the runners which was scraping into the metal runner causing tension for the window to go up. Help from a trusty pair of pliers did this and now the window goes up even better than my dads new golf.
