Is it possible to have too many mp3s?

I've just been tidying up, putting a load of bulkily-boxed ancient backup archive discs and magazine covers into a new 240-disc leather folder thing (i'm impressed by it's awesome swallowing power, fnarr!).

Whilst doing it, I found 29 mp3 cds i burnt in october '03.... that haven't been played since and i completely forgot about ... altogether that's approximately the capacity of my entire 20gb player. Damn.

Added to the others that were already on the shelf, that makes 159 discs.

Is that just a little excessive?

At the same time ... two 25-disc "cake" spindles, each more-or-less full... packed with Divx / VCD CDRs... again totally forgotten about and from the same period (guess i had a lot more arsing-about time then!) --- adding onto the roughly 300-strong collection on an old shelf elsewhere in the room!! (itself orignially intended to hold about 80 music discs).

I need someone to volunteer to watch them for me, because I reckon I'm set for life with that little lot!

Especially as what's going thru my stereo right now, via the mpl3yer, is the second CD i ever bought (i dont talk of the first :D) ... or 3 CDs to be precise. Genuinely old skool compilations rule. But kind of void any chances of listening to something new tonight!

This could possibly be a new, internet-age mental illness: P2P addiction... doesnt matter what it is or whether you're going to ever watch it, but if something interesting pops up during a search for some other item (or say you use direct connect and browse an enormous file list) .... you GOTTA have it.

:D

Parents have very kindly offered to buy me a replacement hdd, which is fantastic.. just can't really replace the data I've lost :( Don't much fancy paying a data recovery firm £80 to recover a load of old MP3's really.. might just take the drive to a friend's house and leech a few gb to get me started ;)

I've got about 10 days worth of MP3s (of which I own pretty much all of on CD) - but I still find it difficult to find something I wanna listen to.

What's the state of the drive? How badly has it died, and how?

Lol.... i've got about 37gb of stuff organised on my HD just in mp3... more than 55gb un-organised - and that only covers up to disc 69 plus a couple gigs of random junk (and... if you believe it... recently encoded stuff that needs to be burnt o_O)

best part of a 100gb partition full of films, and a load of TV shows, music vids etc on another one

those which havent been copied from CD to HD (CDR was my main multimedia storage method til i went from a 40gb to a 250gb disc ... most of the online storage was taken up by games, documents, temp files etc..!) simply don't bear thinking about! they're just sitting there... in waiting... i've still got at least 75gb of free hard disc space but it'd be a waste of time copying more stuff over.

Was originally keeping it all there to share, but i cant get DC to work satisfactiorally with my firewall, and new things tried such as Ares actually choke on it all anyway, under w98 :D

maybe i need to have an auction

(tell you this much - 20gb isn't really enough for an mp3 player, even though i've likely got best part of 2 weeks of 24hr/day tunes on there... need more space for higher quality than 128k, and to store more stuff - i've cherry picked only the best 1/2 from that one 37gb folder and a couple other bits from outside of it, and the player's near-full already.. just gotta wait til 1.8" drives hit ~120gb and upgrade the sucker! 3x the space at 256k average VBR should hit the spot)

It hasn't died spectacularly.. it's been clunking and clicking intermittently for ages, so I knew it was on it's way out, I was just too tight to replace it ;) Basically when I turn on the computer, it still recognises the drive but when it comes to boot from it the computer just hangs there. I tried seeing if the computer could still read it from DOS, but it just gives read errors all the time. I'm sure it's probably salvagable if I try hard enough, they tend to be, but I don't really want to go through all the hassle of setting it up again only to find it dies the next day.

Have you tried the freezer trick - just to try to get it working long enough to get the files off? Haven't done it myself, but am told it works.

Deek.

2400 mp3's and counting still nowhere near filling up my 160gb seagate
all legal downloads of course! (hides)
all i use for playing music in my car is 10 CD-RW'S so i can always have the latest choons without filling up loads of CD-R'S and making a mess!

Only 6.6Gb of mp3s, mostly from my own CDs...

I feel so poor right now. :-( Thing is, I gave up the whole downloading thing about two years ago, because of security concerns (my life sort of depends on the data I have there).

As for movies, now I'm down to the LOTR trilogy in DIVX format.

What I do have, though, is a reasonable collection of SNES roms (54 games as of yesterday), plus a similar number of Java games for Nokia 3510i/3530 and 3100/3200/6100 etc.

I'm totally addicted to them little games.

BTW if anyone is interested let me know and I'll post them in a WAP site.

PS. Now that torrent sites have been closed, what's a good source for movies? (legal downloads only, of course ;-) )

I have a lot of music. (39.5 Days)

My hard drive keeps making clonking noises now, so I'm going to buy a new drive asap.

200gb 8mb cache IDE.

Best price I've found is for a Maxtor at £65.50... Can anyone find me a decent branded one for cheaper???

URGENT!

Maxtor ones these days are pretty robust and very cheap. they used to make a hell of a noise and be soo slow.

If you're luck you may find a 250GB Seagate one (ST3250823AS) for 70-75ish we get these at work.

Not sure where you'd get it from though. DABS?

James.

Nope I reckon thats pretty much about as cheap as you're gonna get one, and good value too IMO might I add :) makes me start thinking about an upgrade!

As for the mp3s, I have 22.4GB, which is plenty! I'm adding to it all the time thanks to allofmp3.com, maybe a couple of albums a week or so, nothing major. I though 22GB of mp3s was quite a bit until I read through this thread!
