Un-nerving clunk on gearchange

the scenario is: i get a big ass 'clunk' sound when i press the throttle, and its worse when i stab at the throttle a bit i.e. gearchanges when youre trying to get some where a little bit faster.
However, it doesnt do it when accelerating in higher gears and slowly in lower gears, or on over-run, and doesnt feel jerky in slow traffic
Anyone have any ideas or had this on their mk4 ? (btw, its a 1600 GL if that makes any difference, and tends to get driven reasonably hard!)

That was my suspicion! possibly gearbox mount ?
its getting looked at on friday morning, but i gotta drive it for the next two days to work (another 80+ miles), is it gonna do much harm to anything else if it is a mounting problem ?

Provided you don't rag it silly - should be fine

it got worse on the way to work today and i was driving very sensibly, and on the way home its developed the tendency to not go the way the steering wheel is pointing it. needless to say, i drove like a vicar all the way home and its in the garage tomorrow morning
fingers crossed its not damaged anything else, its gonna cos enough as it is !

Turns out the ball-joint on one of the wishbones had been working its way free for a good long time now as there was a lot of damage on the arm itself
all was well in the end, its only cost me 50 quid - was expecting a lot more
