what is this device? about the size of an AA battery with some strange ridging on it. looks attached to the exhaust manifold by a length of very thin, L-shaped pipe and a nut(?) at that end.

never really paid it more attention than a bit of idle curiosity, but when i did the weekly turn-over to keep the battery holding some kind of charge, i could see fumes coming out of it, where it joins the manifold. sure i never saw that before. is this bad?

should have known something was up when it's started near-perfectly (once the jump leads were on :x ) and had been idling sweet-as for about 5 minutes - before i noticed!

its for analysing the exhaust gases. new cars dont have them, infact later mk3s dont have them either, theres just a bolt in the hole that it fixes to.

is it just a pipe to fit the garage's emission tester on then? and the rubber thing is a cover?

it doesnt seem to have any wires or other pipes going to it......

might it be its just come loose and needs a quick tweak with a spanner?

More importantly - it's for pre-cat emissions - but they obviously decided nobody cared!!

As long as it's not blowing significantly then I wouldn't worry. It's probably just a bit of oil burning off somewhere.

i dunno, it kept doing it for quite a long time

i have had oil on the manifold before, that curled out under the wheels and made me crap myself (cost for that mistake: one fire extinguisher).... could be the same thing but looks like it's coming out rather than off
