Hi, Just wondering if someone can help.

I had a recon gearbox fitted on my Polo 1.6cl by an amature (It was cheap!) due to an oil leak causing a bearing to go. The problem is not only is the gear change crap but when I get up to high speed, E.g 4th gear at 60mph im getting 4000 - 5000 revs and the engine sounds frekking loud.

Never had this problem before the gearbox change. Could it be that he's got me an uncompatible gerabox? He seemed a bit shady. It took him 4 attempts to get the thing fitted and a £60 speeding ticket which came to me first!

Trouble was could really afford the £1300 price tag vw wanted.

Any suggestions?

sounds like a 5-speed 1 litre, maybe a GT box, something like that...?

i'd say he's done you a number ...... goodbye to any MPG over 30!

surely you could have found someone decent to fit it for you without having to resort to an official VW garage? (£1300?!?!)

e.g. my local mechanic could probably have got that sorted for under £400 all in, and it would have been a better quality job.

Its def more noticable in 5th.
Going over 70mph is when I notice the difference. Sounds like I am driving a 1 litre and not a 1.6.

MPG over 30? wot do you mean, sorry if that sound thick. I'm new.

Got a few quoats from local mechanics and the cheapest was around £800 min. Plus the guy who done it for me is a family freind and he siad he knew what he was doing so i trusted him.

Lesson Learned.

£800? ouch....... either it's a lot more of a job and mk4 gearboxes are worth a hell of a lot more, or they saw you coming. £400 all in is more than my total came to..

it was the dad of a workmate who i thought was a friend what did my passenger door - nuff said there as well..... useless!

70mph comes at 3,800rpm on my close ratio mk2 box.. does that sound about what you've got? They're quite common boxes, if you had it done on the cheap I'd guess they just nicked one from an old mk2/3 polo instead of getting you the mk4 box with the correct gear ratios...

Getting about 4,500 rmp at 70 in 5th gear.

Went to a VW specialist today and he comfirmed that it wasn't the correct gearbox. Also said something about that when this guy did the change, he pulled out an indent and dropped it into the gearbox and thats why i've got crap gear selection. To get 5th I have to put it in nuetral and slam it to the right and up. An reverse is even better, pops right back out of gear when it feels like it.

So another recon gearbox job. Not as bad as I thought though, as he said he could do it for about £600 and do a proper job.
