as you may have read, my credit rating lol aint that good

its either the way i earn my money which is hard to prove cos my hourly rate changes dependant on the job, i freelance randomly or it might be to do with my online fraud plagued morgan stanley card.

either way it leaves me with a predicamet.

borrowing big sums of money would cost me too dam much.

but my gear box is shagged.


i've been told the syncromesh in 5th is on its way out.

what happens is once warm, and in 5th, theres alot more noise than there ever was. Clutch down no noise, clucth up, lots of noise. Like a whining i suppose the noise is.

lol and 4th gear does it louder now.

Either way it sounds like my gear box is knackered, like i said, clucth up, no noise.

So, my 117,000 mile polo 1.4 8v needs a new gear box.

So I'm clearly gonna be putting 4-500 quid on my other credit card when I have enough time off work to loose my car for how ever long it takes to get a gear box sorted.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?


I'm also wondering, if my gear box is coming out - should I also try and source a 1.4 16v unit and get it and its gear box put in while they're at takig my car to peices? Or am I jumping the cost up big time now?

I had to have all the bearings in my gearbox replaced after about 60000 miles

On the subject of switching engines, it seems silly to bother really, you may as well just buy a 1.4 16v!!!!

on the american sites, this seems to be a common problem and is apparently caused by low or badly contaminated gearbox oil --- first thing i would reccommend is checking the level and the quality of oil in there, and if possible draining and replacing it if you're in any doubt at all.

if you're really stuck you can have my mkiii (for a ... "fair" price) and rob the 4 speed off it ... it may be a little wide for you but the overall spread of ratios should be alright for a 16v!

maybe a bit low set for an 8v (but more suitably gapped), but any road up it would beat being stuck with only 1st 2nd and 3rd.... (instead, 1st, 2nd, 2nd and a half, and 3rd and a half..)

on the other hand, last time i looked (yesterday), there was a GT 5-speed going for 70 quid in the for sale section ----- again not a perfect solution, but if you can fit it yourself / find someone who'll do it cheap / for beer / for sh*ts & giggles it'll stop the gap, and be far more suitable than a 4 speed....
