in my GT there is 5 wires for the stereo,
a red/white - permanent positive
a brown - negative (earth)
grey/blue - instrument panel lighting
brown/red - control wire for ignition key, turning on/off
and a blue/white - speed signal for volume control
(That is what the Polo manual says about the wires anyway)
now I have 4 wires coming from the h/u (sony)
red -
black -
a blue 'memory 12v'
and a yellow 'iumination' wire
My haynes doesn't really help neither does my Polo instruction manual.
Also lost the wiring diagram for my h/u (Sony CDXMP40)
Can anyone help?

car .......................... head unit
red/white ....................blue
brown ....................... black
grey/blue ...................yellow
brown/red....................red
does that make any sense Dom? this is only right if your wire colour codes are correct as I don't have a mk3 Haynes

on ma G40 i have
Red
brown
red/brown
blue/white
blue/grey
i have a plug for the back of my radio (when it arrives) and they have
red - ignition/switched
black - chassis
blue - power antenna
orange - illumination ????? (can't see the words properly)
yellow - battery/constant
this plug was wired into a sony head unit which was in my mark2, then i put the head unit in the mk3 which had all the wiring ready. so this does work a sony headunits.

p.s. does anyone know wot the small black wire that runns along side the beesting aerial? is it like a booster, does it need to be wired in? i wouldn't think so but thought i'd better check!

I'd put both blue and red wires together on the HU and wire them to the car live.
Earth to earth..
and if you HU doesn't light up run the yellow to the permanent live too.
If you blow your HU up though, don't come crying to me....

I think it's meant to go to the remote.
