Hi
Looking through a mk5 brochure yesterday I spotted a gear knob that I quite like.
Is a gear knob for a 6N2 a straight swap into a 6N (mk4) ?.

should be, if not it should only take a tiny bit of fettling to get it to fit. I've seen Golf and A3 knobs in polos and lupos so it can be done

Yes.
I've fitted a Mk4 Golf gear knob in my car. Much better... Takes about 5 - 10 minutes.
Make sure you get a gearknob without an external ring around the base. In my case, the base (where the boot meets the console) had an inner ring that could easily be pulled out. Some have a chrome external ring too, this can't be removed AFAIK.
Here's mine:

Thanks
That looks well nice Speedlaw.
Did that come with the brass clip thing and how do you tighten it onto the shaft ?
The one I've seen looks identical but it's a dark wood finish !.

if you have the ring you can cut it off and replace it with a hose clamp (the screw type) and the boot will prolly come over the ridge but the main problem will be that the shaft is d shaped i think

Only in the mk5 brochure itself. I'm not sure on the wooden knob, it's a little different though.
I think this topic is gonna raise a few jokes with words like 'wood' and 'knob' in it !

I've no info on the Mk5 knob to be honest, but the Mk4 Golf has a brass ring that can easily be clamped on using a pair of pliers. That's what I did. Part number available on request (since I have to look it up...).

This is the part number you have quoted in your DIY Guide :
1J0 711 113 A E74
I rather like the look of this one

Did I quote a number? Where's my memory? Oh well.
This one is a 5-speed Mk4 Golf in full black leather. Comes complete with knob and gaitor. Pic is original and shows the installation in my car, which is a 97 Mk4. No trouble at all to fit!
Good luck Jake.
