VW alarm knackered

Hi peeps,
The alarm on my '98 Polo 16v has become out of sync with the fobs after the battery was disconnected whilst changing the cambelt. I've tried to resync it as detailed in the manual but no luck
I took it to the dealers (a SEAT garage) who sold me the car and their auto-electrician has said that the control box is knacked. He's seen it before on these alarms and the only solution is a new control box. Trouble is he's unable to source one, so I turn to you guys 
The alarm is a VW one that came with the car. The fob is rectangular with two buttons on the top and a slider switch on the side to disable the internal montion detectors. Anyone know where I can get a new control box? VW don't stock it any more apparently.
