Dials and stuff

My polo has the usual dial stuff, speedo, engine temp, petrol etc.
In place of the rev counter it has the clock (boooo!), is it possible to change the whole instrument cluster for a one that has the rev counter etc without doing too much work to the car. Or isnt my car equipped to cope with a rev counter. (If it is possible which polo has the cluster i'm after)
Cheer, Brian

yes its possible, you can take one off a coupe S or a mk1 golf Gti (they are identical and iirc you can get the one froma mk2 golf GTi to fit and the speedo goes round to 120.
dunno how you rig them up though.

Any of the square faced clocks will just plug straight in, the wiring's all there regardless of what the standard equipment was. Ideally you want the clocks from a mk2 polo coupe S or a ranger, or alternatively you can use the dials from a mk1 golf gti, although if you do that then you'll have a yellow full beam lamp and no brake warning light. Either way, you'll want to take your speedo out of your cluster and put it in the new cluster to retain your mileage, unless you're confident clocking odometres (not hard to do, but I'm not sure about the legality of it.. probably alright if you're keeping the same mileage). It's easy to swap out the speedo, as the cluster is divided into three parts, the speedo, middle section and the clock/rev counter, they just unbolt and pull out.

i believe that there are some subtle wiring differences between the golf an polo clocks relating to the oil pressure system. Im not sure of the ins and outs but some modification is required. Best bet is like GC says get some off a coupe s or ranger.

I've been running mk1 golf clocks for the best part of a year with no problems, no modifications were necessary... Sure you're not thinking of the issues with mk3 GT clocks into a mk3 CL?

Im just going off what madmatt has said in the past. (the madmatt that lives down south not the one that lives up north near metz) Like I said I dunno what the story behind it is, its just what Ive heard. Id almost say "whats the point in having a 120 speedo when youre unlikely to go over 100 in a mk2 anyway?" But then I would be a hypocrit as Ive just put a G40 speedo in my 1.4 GT which goes up to 160mph.

Lol @ Gareth! I've got 160mph clocks in my bedroom back home, much prefer the joke factor of watching the speedo needle bend on the G with stock clocks. I find the Mk2 speedo quite deceptive after being used to a Mk3 - find myself driving at 50mph as it looks quite high up the scale...

and its even more ironic for me as I never venture much past 100 anyway. So thats 60mph I will never use. Its really weird the 160 speedo too as most of the time only a third of the scale gets used.

Cheers for the advice chaps, I think i'll keep my peepers peeled for a coupe S or ranger cluster, seems like the best and safest bet as i dont want to brake anything i shouldnt, LOL
