Yesterday the back box on my 1.4 16v 97 decided it didn't want to be a part of the car anymore  , so had to get a new one fitted. cost me £60 fitted. Does anyone know if that is a good price?? But now it sometimes rattle against the heat shields under the car and it's doing my head in :x .

P.S. the exhaust system now now sounds meatier (is that a word  ) well a more deeper sound, or might have to check the centre box :(

£60 fitted is a good price.

If it's rattling, take it back!

I just got a new backbox too, as my exhaust fell to bits.. I had a 6N before this 6N2 and the same happened, the car sound really nice now. I payed £51 for my exhaust fitted but i was quoted upto £70, all depends on the brand, mine is a good make and comes with a 5 year garantee apparently..

If its rattling, (which my old one did) it normally means that something on the rest of the exhaust system is loose or damaged, I ended up having to get a whole new exhaust on my 6N from VW coz the garage did something wrong when fitting it.

But luckily they payed for the one from VW because of some policy about the customer being happy or something they had. Ended up costing me £61 for a full exhaust from the engine back...

Just spoke to my dad and he said that the reason there was a rattle was because the car was so silent after the new exhaust it meant that you could hear the rattle that was already there before the next tailpipe. It was just unheard due to noise from the tailpipe being in bad order.

Maybe the rattle was already there on your car and you are only noticing now because its quieter. I would have thought that it would be a bad baffle (if thats how u spell it) in either the tailpipe or front box. Hope this helps but sorry if not.. im no expert.

Only talking from experience here and it might be totally different for your car.

it's definetly the new back box thats rattling, i can hear it and feel it when i'm driving. Its an on and off rattle, only when revs are about 2.5. going to take it back tomorrow, maybe it just needs adjusting.

Thanks

if it's the back box that's odd, maybe a baffle or a bolt's not tightened up on a clamp.

I had a rattle on my 6N and that was at about 3k revs, was the heatshield - a good way to fix it is to bend the heatshield by the tunnel, and shove a bit of sealant in there. works wonders.

anyhow, might not be that anyway!

Brought it back, had a look underneath and the middle box was resting against the heatshield. Anyway, it had a hole in it so changed it aswell, £30. I havent drove it yet but the missis says its 100% now :D

So... my backbox and exhaust is gonna need replacing.
From the above I should be expecting around £60 for a fitted stock one right?

Anyone know about the cost of a removable decat system and the power gains from it?
