I think it has more meaning on the larger-engined models like the Boras, Golfs and Passats? IIRC on those cars, using the 1.9-litre PD engine, all-silver lettering is 90bhp, red-I is 115bhp, red-D-I is 130bhp and all-red TDI is 150bhp diesel. Having said that, sometimes the badges aren't related to the powerplant like they should be, the Golf Mk4 GTI is a good example, some turbo cars have all-silver badges, some N/A cars have red lettering, it can be misleading
On the Polo, I think it simply signifies the use of pumpe-düse technology. As far as I remember the Polo 6N2 was offered with the 1.9-litre SDI diesel engine (64bhp, no turbo) or the 1.4 TDI (75bhp but with pumpe-düse innards) like yours... the TDI has a smaller block but also has an intercooler and turbo on it and has much better performance figures as a result

Yup the 1.4 TDi is a smaller block as it is only a 3 Cylinder !
They still go pretty quick tho

i understood the red d and i on the polo meant it had the high pressure diesel. ie the pd bit which means pumpe duse (or something in german)
