I have seen a mk4 on mk5 gti rims and it is beautiful. My next quest is to find out how low I can go, does anyone know if I can get 60 mm lowering springs or do I have to coilovers for the ultimate drop?

you can get -60mm springs but these will kill your dampers. you really need to buy some matched dampers when you get your springs

damper problems are one of those things that you have to put up with, i want low, if there were uprated dampers with a low enough drop I would consider it

Knackered shocks are not fun. My Golf was really dangerous when the rear shocks went. It would drift sideways on straight road.

Shocks don't influence height. So if there isn't a set of shocks and springs available, get them seperately.

Bad dampers will ruin the handling...

just so you know mine is the one with polo on the plates and in this pic is at -100 but the next day i got bored and went to - 11 cm but this can cause a few icle problems

You can get a complete kit of 60mm springs and matched shortened dampers for the mk4 from several companies. Raceland do one which is also quite cheap. I think Speedlaw has this kit ?.

Polo17 that comes on here sometimes has his mk5 GTi down about 80mm on H&R coilovers and it looks phat !. That was on the 15X6 BBS GTi splitrims but is now on Brock 16's. You will be able to go down very low with the GTi rims because of the narrow width and high offset of (I think) ET45.

Well it didn't say 60mm on the box actually, but I assume it's 60. It didn't say anything on the box now that I think about it.

Looks lower than cars I've seen with 40mm, but in all honesty this varies from car to car, as well as from one suspension brand to another.

ps just read your sig and i feel sorry for you but why not wrap the wheel in paper of somthing and then write "under construction" or "dealers fault" or if you can get the zimmerman discs on tonight then remove the 5 spoke wheel and show off your brakes (remember to use an axle stand and place a sign on the car warning people that it is raised, to cover your self against any leagal stuff)

Well I went to a meeting today with the three-wheel motion and I didn't get laughed at. Well not in my face anyway. It was quite embarrasing nonetheless.

Stood next to that blue Belgian Mk5 today, the one with the cream leather, slammed on 13's... It is Soooo low!! You can practically shake hands across the roof with someone on the other side of the car...!

I want coils. Badly.

So my advice (finally ontopic):

Save your money and find some coils. No matter how low the springs/damper combo is, it's not enough. After a while you'll be bitten by the dubbing bug, and you'll want to scrape and rub...

I'm tempted to go lower on my car. It's currently on 30mm Eibach's although it's more like 40mm. Surely going really low although looking good it must get to a point where handling is worse ?. I can see the suspension being beyond it's effective limits.
Or am I completely misunderstood ?.

I'd say you're right. There seems to be a division between the ones that believe as we do, and those that think scraping means you can go through corners faster. The Vortex has dozens of threads that discuss this exact topic.

I like low cars because it looks good. I doubt that the handling will be optimal if the driveshaft hits the chassis, but I could be wrong.

Given the suspension travel I still have, I'd say going two or three centimeters lower wouldn't hurt the handling. It would hurt the ride quality probably.

Its more to do with your a damper and spring rates rather than height. most racing teams (DTM, BTCC etc...) have springs that are almost solid. a lower centre of gravity is better, but not if your constantly hitting the floor (that right Ash ).
