Ditto mk2 golfs, but only 1.05 and 1.3 litre models, the others have cable change boxes.

I thought the layshaft (right term?) spline size was different from the mk1 / early mk2 engines to the mid/late mk2 & mk3 ones?

Which is why all the ratios etc change between these two generations

Least thats what some other info i've seen suggests.. and if your spline won't match up with the shaft, you're going nowhere :)

sure an adaptor wouldnt be too hard to make / get hold of though

Oh, that's a point. I presume it could be rectified by getting a clutch plate for a later type gearbox, thus converting to the later spline type?

silly me, forgot to say that I have 1.3 GT (engine code HH)

and I would like that 5-speed gearbox to fittable to this engine with the least as possible conversions (clutch, axels, etc.)

Ah, right, then any of the above will fit the engine with no modifications.

Just a small thought though.. I don't know if it's the same on mk1's, but early mk2's couldn't accept 5 speed gearboxes without having a section of the inner arch removed to accomodate the extended box. Later mk2's had this section removed as standard when the 5 speed boxes became an option, but it just leads me to wonder whether mk1s had the same problem, as they never had 5 speeds as standard..

So you belive that clutch and axles would fit?

Yes, I already have spoken with someone who told me that no way 5 speed gearbox could fit mk1.......now I don't remember any more why, is it because the space or gearbox mounts......???.....or is it this what you are talking about which I, btw, don't understand at all  What do you mean by inner arch, do you mean on the part of the chasis.....?

The 5 speed box is essentially a 4 speed casing with an extension bolted onto the end to make room for the extra gear. The mk1's and early mk2's had space for the 4 speed box inside the engine bay, but if you try to fit a 5 speed there won't be room for the longer box. The later mk2's get around this by having a sort of arch shape cut out of the inner wing.. it's just forward of the suspension strut, at the end of the gear box. Look at the end of your gearbox and imagine where the end of it would go if it was a tad longer, you'll know what I mean :) I remember someone managed to fit a 5 speed to an early mk2 with a bit of cutting and welding of the chassis , but I guess that's a fair bit of work really.

I'm not at home now, but I'll take a peak in a few days.......oh come on, I don't belive it's such a problem to make room for it.......got any pics of mods on chasis like that?

I just got answer on ClubGTI that gearbox I need is 085 2G from golf/jetta 1.3.......that should be it, I suppose

You'd be better transplanting the lot m8!,
driveshafts, front struts, lower arms with bigger ball joints, (unless your's is a late mk1 82, as these already have em)as well as the anti roll bar, this has a kink in it it clear the 3f's box, which should clear the bay no probs! so stick with the 3f's box so's you dont alter the ratios!, and also the mk1 roll bar is only designed to fit the 4 speed, so it will catch!

This will be the same as my current transplant in progress!
You'll also need to replace the tank with a fuel injection one(although there is a conversion you can make to the mk1 tank) if you wanna run the injection system.
I'll be running mine on a pierburg carb to get it running, and till i can get my head round the injection system bits!
Hope thats of some help!

I've got a 5-speed box in my Derby (box type 085) it needed a few mods to fit though:

1. Cut & shut of the gear shift rod
2. 5 speed gearbox mount
3. Later spec front anti roll bar
4. Later spec clutch

No mods to inner wings or anything severe like that, it just dropped in really.
