Help! electric fan (again!)

Hey

I got my GT about 3 weeks ago, and found that the electric fan wasn't cutting in when it was supposed to. After testing the fan, I replaced the switch, and it all worked fine.

Sitting in traffic this morning on the way to work, the temperature rose past its normal point before the fan cuts in. I whacked the heater on full, and opened all the windows, seemed to do the trick, bringing it back down to about 75deg.

Got to work a few minutes early, so i let it idle to see if the fan came on. It got up to 110deg, and the fan hadn't cut in. I'm going out to test the fan on my lunch break, but can anyone think of anything else it could be?

I doubt its the switch, as its only 2 weeks old, and a genuine VAG part!

Cheers in advance

an air lock in the system perhaps?

but surely the fan would just come on more frequently if there was an airlock? Or do you mean there's an airlock that is causing there to not be coolant around the switch, therefore not activating it when it needs to be?

I've had exactly that happen before.

so to cure it you?.....

- take the rad cap off and give it a bit of a rev when warm?

- take the top hose off the rad, run the car and flush the system out?

or are there other methods?

by the way, what coolant can you run in a VW? I've heard something about G11? or is it B11?

Cheers

Theres a bleed screw for the heater, under the scuttle tray. The coolant used to be G11, but is now replaced by G12+

well, i went out on my lunch break, and tested the fine - all worked fine. I sprayed the connector plug with GT85, and also the switch, and it came on exactly when it was supposed to - about 102deg.

Don't quite know why it didn't work this morning, but i'll be keeping my eye on it!!

Thanks for the advice, i'll bear in mind the airlock in the cooling system as a possibility, and I'll have search for the heater bleed valve tomorrow.

As regards the G11/G12 - where do I get this stuff from?

Thanks!!

The coolant is available from VAG, or slightly cheaper at GSF.
