Does anybody know why I am getting an annoying metalic whirring sound when i put my foot on the clutch? This happens even when you are only just touching the clutch pedal. My previous experience led me to believe that it was the release bearing or thrust bearing. I asked for it to be checked when it was recently serviced and the garage decided to replace the whole clutch. The sound is still there, I am almost 300 pounds poorer :x and the same german specialist is now assuring me that my gearbox is on its way out! Oh yes... sound goes away when foot is OFF the clutch!!!

I think I know the noise you mean because my car does it, and so does my missuses brothers 16v, I think its common. I never noticed until he said, I think you have been scammed with the new clutch!

it's different to the normal gearbox issue - that one rattles when the foot is off the clutch, and goes away with the pedal pressed.

it's a very handy site, and suggests that it is the release bearing?
